“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”

– Isaiah 9:6,7

Since the holidays are only recently behind us, I want to share a thought with you based on Isaiah 9, which is the famous chapter that names all the things the coming Messiah would be called. There’s a whole list, you know…Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and (my favorite) Prince of Peace. The latter is what I want you meditate on today: as life seeks to tear you down and keep you striving, remember that you have a Prince of Peace to rule in your heart and in your circumstances.

It’s interesting that this passage was written in a day when princes and kings were known as warriors who often used skulls, blood, and banners to establish their reign and identity. In the time of the Assyrians and other violent peoples, a message was given of One who would sit atop the throne of the earth and rule with peace. In fact, beyond our rather shallow English definition of peace, the Hebrew word is Shalom, which means wholeness and completeness. A Kingdom of Shalom is one in which everything is in its right place, kind of like Eden.

Friend, because the Prince of Shalom lives in you and sits on the throne of your heart, He has made everything right — wholeness is yours in Him. Never lose sight of the fact that He has given you everything that you need to walk in peace. As you are presented with new opportunities in the coming year, or maybe as you face challenging circumstances, allow Him to reign and guide you in His Shalom. As you do, you can rest in the confident assurance that His ruling will be just, righteous, and always for your benefit. May His peace continually be your compass as you move forward in the things He has called you to!

Thank you, Lord Jesus, for being my Prince of Shalom. I ask you to rule in my heart and bring your peace to my circumstances and decisions.

Does the Prince of Shalom reign in your heart?
