An intriguing aspect of history is that when the Areopagus on Mars Hill was dedicated, a play written by Eumenides was performed, featuring a notable speech by Apollo. In his speech, Apollo declares, “When the dust drinks up man’s blood, once he has died, there is no resurrection.” This statement underscores the prevailing belief at the time: once blood is spilled and a person dies, there is no resurrection or reversal of death—mortality is final. Many, especially the Epicureans, embraced this view: there is no resurrection, no heaven, no gods, and no spirit; all were considered myths.

Then Paul arrives and boldly shares the good news of the resurrection. Guided by the Spirit, he challenges these deeply rooted beliefs. It’s as if a spiritual barrier had been established to prevent acceptance of the resurrection. Remarkably, after Paul’s speech, one of the Areopagus judges, Dionysius, is moved, converted, and becomes a disciple of Jesus. This is truly astonishing—imagine a judge in a pagan world, after a lifetime of studying philosophies and worshipping pagan gods, encountering this message, being profoundly touched, and experiencing radical transformation.

My friend, what about the other judges? After scoffing, they dismiss Paul with polite words—something akin to, “We’d like to hear more.” In those days, however, this phrase was a courteous way of saying, “We’re not interested; please leave.” Their response was final, signaling they did not want to hear from Paul again. Yet, even in the face of skepticism and polite dismissal, the message of hope and resurrection found a way to break through. Dionysius’ transformation is a testament to the power of faith to change lives, regardless of background or circumstance.
