“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” -Proverbs 3:5-6
One of my all-time favorite men of faith is Brother Andrew, now 88, who was called by God to smuggle Bibles into the communist parts of the world. He was an advocate for Christianity in places like the Soviet Union, and later on and even now in the Middle East.
Jan, a friend of mine, said when he was with Brother Andrew in Lebanon during an uprising, every single morning, no matter how bad things were, Brother Andrew would wake up, completely fearless, and he would shave. Every day it was important, no matter how bad things were, that he shaved.
One morning when they woke up, a riot was going on nearby. Bullets were flying overhead, Molotov cocktails were exploding, and mobs of people were moving through the streets. Yet, there’s Brother Andrew, using the side mirror of a car, shaving. Jan said, “Brother Andrew, we need to be going. We’re going to die if we stay out here.” as he continues shaving, Brother Andrew says, “Jan, if we’re going to heaven today, we’re going to heaven clean shaven.”
Brother Andrew’s an old man now, and healthy. He’s been in some of the most dangerous situations and God has preserved him. There’s something so special about people with radical trust and radical faith in God.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, may I become like Brother Andrew. May I grow in faith and find my way to trust you with every moment of my life. Amen.
REFLECTION: In what areas of your life do you have radical trust in God?
