“The word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.’ ”

– Jeremiah 1:4,5

Today, we examine the call of Jeremiah, which will help us to understand our callings. Jeremiah Chapter 1, states: “The word of the Lord came to me, saying ‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.’ ” Friend, take a moment to let this sink in: God knew before you were born that you would do great things in your life. As we reflect on the greatness before us, it’s easy to say, “I’m too old, young, divorced,” or, “I messed up.” We can all say, “I have issues!”

But despite your challenges, the Lord knew before you arrived what your callings would be. When Jeremiah hears this calling from the Lord, he begins to give all the reasons he is disqualified, including: “I don’t even know how to speak; I’m too young!” Don’t we all do the same? We say, Lord, why me, I don’t have the finances, skill, prestige, or language. Lord, I don’t even fit in with the culture.” But the Lord told Jeremiah to not say he was too young. He told Jeremiah he must go to everyone He sends him to, and say whatever He commands of him: “Do not be afraid of them for I am with you, and I’ll rescue you.”

Friend, let’s relax and trust that the Lord will get us where we need to go. God knows how to navigate our comings and goings. We can trust His instructions and lean into the comfort of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer

Father, help me to receive your calling even though I feel disqualified. I will trust your instructions.

Reflection

Did you accept what God has called you to do? Are you able to relax and trust God?
