Over the past few days, I have discussed the importance of the relationship between husbands and wives. However, not everyone is called to marriage, and that is perfectly acceptable. There are meaningful relationships outside of marriage that God blesses and that hold great value. Parenting is another area where guidance is crucial. Loving our children is essential, but so is providing instruction, discipline, and correction. The Bible teaches that failing to correct your children is a form of neglect. If a parent avoids disciplining their children, unfortunately, this can be detrimental to their growth and well-being.

Sometimes, instead of pleading with your children—“won’t you please, please, please get in the car”—you simply need to give clear direction. Love your children deeply, but remember that loving well also includes setting boundaries and providing guidance. If we focus solely on love, and neglect correction, we do our children a disservice. Honor your father and mother—this commandment is not just for children, but for adults as well. The Bible instructs us to love our spouses, the church, and our neighbors.

My friend, interestingly, the Bible commands us even to love our enemies, but it does not specifically command us to love our parents. Instead, it tells us to honor them. If you honor your parents, you will be blessed as a parent yourself. If you do not, you may miss out on that blessing. This principle of honor applies to marriage, parenting, and friendships: when you believe and follow God’s word, it becomes a guiding truth in your life. This is God’s way, and it stands true for all who believe.
