Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

– Matthew 11:28-30

When I was first at the Crystal Cathedral, a group of pastors and I had to do a training ropes course. I hate ropes courses. So I get up on one of the high ropes that I had to walk across like a tightrope, and I just freeze. It’s so safe, but you’re so high up and you’re scared. It took all of the pastors so long to get across the rope. Except for one pastor: Bill Gaultiere. Bill just climbs up (smile on his face) and walks across with absolutely no problem. Bill’s my mentor now. He literally seemed to have almost no fear doing this ropes course so I asked him: What are you doing? He responded with I’m just walking to Jesus. So Bill is living every day in the easy rhythms of grace — in deep, intimate relationship with Jesus. Maybe today, you’re struggling with crippling anxiety. Let me give you some hope. Bill was there, too. For years, he struggled with anxiety, worry, and fear. But he trained himself to live in the easy rhythms of grace. He taught himself that he didn’t have to be perfect all the time and control everything. Instead, he was able to connect deeply with God and other people and to start taking small steps towards scary things, becoming the great man of God he is: a man I love very much.

Prayer

Help me, God, to walk in your easy rhythms of grace. Make me into the person you want me to be.

Reflection

Are you walking in fear? Or in the easy rhythms of Jesus?
