Scripture in the Morning

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.”

– Romans 15:4

I shared the second stage in my “morning meditation,” which includes prayer, with you yesterday. Today, I’m going to tell you about the third thing I do every day, which is read the Bible. After connecting with Jesus through prayer, I notice that my heart is prepared to study His Word and that I recognize things that I would not have seen otherwise. I underline the text and ask a lot of questions as I read. In essence, I strive to be as engaged with what I’m reading as possible. I usually read one Old Testament chapter and one New Testament chapter, and then I always read the Proverb for the day. Because there are 31 Proverbs and 31 days in the month, I read the one that corresponds to that day. I read Proverbs 19 today because it is November 19th.

I’ve had my coffee and am starting to burst to life at this point in my morning routine! My mind is awake, I’m sensing the strength of the Holy Spirit in the room, and my heart is full of God’s Word. Now it’s time for me to start the second phase of my daily “practice,” and we’ll discuss the rest of it tomorrow. Friend, I hope you have found what I’ve shared so far to be encouraging and that you’ve been able to apply some of it to your own life. I believe it will make a significant impact in how you feel and how you deal with the problems of the day!

Prayer

Jesus, I give thanks for your Word. I promise to study it and put my heart into it so that it can study me as well.

Reflection

What methods do you use to study the Bible? Is reading God’s Word a part of your daily routine?
