Something From Nothing

“As it is written: ‘I have made you a father of many nations.’ He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.”

– Romans 4:17

When we examine the story of Creation, it comes down to God making something out of nothing. Because He is the Beginning and the End, all power is in His hands, and He has the authority to call things that are not as though they are. While human beings are blessed with the ability to create in His image, we are bound to employ in our designs that which already exists. But this is not the case with our Heavenly Father — He is the originator of all. As people, our minds are finite and our thinking is limited to that which we can see and understand. We know what’s humanly possible, and we live within the boundaries of what we can assimilate with our senses. However, God doesn’t have the same perimeters, so when it comes to His ability achieve or overcome, nothing is too hard! Though Abraham was called to be the father of many nations — yet he had not one child by the time he was 100 years old — the Lord’s power wasn’t limited. He wasn’t concerned about lifespans or aging bodies, for those things aren’t of consequence to Him. He fulfilled His promise then, and He still does it today. In fact, because we’re connected to His heart through the atoning blood of Jesus, we’ve inherited His Holy Spirit, and we can bear witness in the deepest parts of us that with Him, nothing is impossible!

My friend, are you discouraged? Do you need breakthrough in some area of your life? If so, consider the God who calls things into being that are not. Even if you feel surrounded and you see no way out, remember the One who isn’t contained by time and space. He specializes in doing what seems unachievable by human standards, and He loves revealing His glory in response to your faith. Though you are weak, Jesus is strong, and He will bring all the resources of Heaven and earth to your aid when you seek His Kingdom and trust Him to do what’s not possible in human power!

Prayer

Jesus, I ask you for a miracle. Expand my mind, enlarge my heart, respond to my expectant faith, and prepare me to receive it.

Reflection

Where in your life do you need God to call something that isn’t as though it is? Take a moment to thank Him for working in that situation.
