Staff Spotlight: Karen Galvin

How long have you been with the ministry?

10 years (Technically since March, 2008. Not made “official” until June, 2008)

What do you do for Shepherd’s Grove?
I am the Facilities Manager. I directly oversee the Security & Facilities departments and indirectly oversee Maintenance, Utilities, and Event Coordination.

How did God bring you to the ministry?
I discovered an ad at Santa Ana College for a minimum wage job working part-time in the Gift Shop/Bookstore at Crystal Cathedral. It paid too little money, was not enough hours, and was NOT the type of job I was looking for but God told me to go for it because you never know where it will lead. When I went for the interview, the Human Resources lady told me she thought I’d be much better suited for a position with the Hour of Power called “Detail/Correspondence”, which DID pay what I needed and WAS full-time! However, I knew I was under-qualified and had too much of a checkered past for them to hire me. But God was in control. After going through 3 interviews I was hired. I literally started crying and screaming on the phone when they called to offer me the job. Since then, I’ve worked in nearly every Hour of Power department: Teleministry, Mail Room, Data Entry, Stewardship, Detail/Correspondence, and now for the last 2 1/4 years, Facilities.

What is your favorite part about working here?
My coworkers. Through thick and thin, I can always depend on someone to say just the right thing to bring me joy … whether I like it or not!
Also, what could be better than getting paid to be part of bringing God’s word to the world?

Do you have an impactful story to share from your job?
Easy one…
The way this ministry and staff gathered around me and my children as we were challenged with my illness over the holidays!
Everyone showed us such unconditional love and the spirit of giving while expecting nothing in return. I will never forget it, but more importantly, my kids will never forget it. This was an amazing opportunity for me to explain to them what the family of God is about.
Why would a bunch of people, some who know me well and some who don’t, run out on a moment’s notice and go shopping for a lady at their work and her kids when they all have troubles and families of their own? I just kept telling them it was because God teaches us to love and that’s what my coworkers were doing — being faithful and honoring Jesus.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
My life and what I consider enjoyable both have changed a great deal since my recent illness.  Now, I love hanging out with my kids, watching a movie or eating a meal together. I am also rediscovering the pure joy of reading the Bible and meditating on the word. I also hope to rediscover fishing. That used to be my favorite outdoor activity but I haven’t been in years and years.

What are you currently watching on Netflix?
I haven’t watched a series on Netflix in a couple of years but I have been trying to get through the first half hour of the movie Get Out without falling asleep. My son, Jacob, keeps getting on me to watch it all the way through. I will … soon … after my nap.

If you were a crayon, what color would you be?
I would be one of those Crayola scented crayons colored dark purple with black and pink polka dots and smell of vanilla.
