A Hyperlinked Life

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28 As I’ve studied and taught the Bible, I’ve learned that the Word of God is a hyperlinked document. Now obviously, I don’t mean that literally since the term hyperlink originated with the internet, but what I do mean is that everything in Scripture is correlated. Since most Jews had the Torah and the rest of the Old Testament memorized, when they heard teaching on a particular subject, their minds immediately jumped to other Biblical texts that dealt with the same topic. If a Rabbi spoke about an eagle, for instance, the listener would be able to recall multiple other verses that mentioned eagles, and this would give him or her a cultural and contextual understanding.
