Advancing With Courage
“Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 3:12 In the Bible, there’s a fascinating concept called the armor of God, which draws from the armor worn by ancient Greek warriors. The Greeks developed a military formation called the phalanx — a powerful system of interlocking shields and spears that proved devastatingly effective in battle. The Romans later adopted and refined it. But here’s what stands out about the biblical armor: there is no protection on the back. Every piece listed covers only the front. The shield, the helmet, the breastplate—everything faces forward. The message is clear: you are completely protected as long as you are facing the enemy. You lose when you embrace fear. You lose when you retreat. You lose when you run away.
