Hearing the Voice of the Beloved

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27 I would like to talk about one of the most important aspects of living the life Christ offers us. Jesus makes it clear this is something every Christian should do, and that is hearing God’s voice. The voice of the Beloved — God is speaking to us right now, right where we are.  God has a word for you today. That word might come through me, but more likely it will come directly to you, by Him. When we come across someone who hears God’s voice, many of us think of them as being special, a little strange, or super spiritual. But actually, they have an openness to the spirit.  The truth is, God loves to talk to everybody. And when I say He loves to talk to everybody, I don’t mean just Christians.

The Words of Jesus

“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” – Matthew 4:4 Yesterday, we talked about solitude, the first of three habits we observe as we study the life of Jesus. Today, I want to introduce the second discipline we see our Savior exercising consistently, and that is Scripture memorization. Committing the Word of God to heart was a practice that was deeply embedded in Hebrew culture, and for good reason. Unlike today, when nearly everyone has a Bible in their possession, the scrolls were kept at the synagogue, so memorizing them was the primary way to carry them into daily life. Perhaps this is why every Jewish child was required to commit to their minds the Torah — or the first five books of the Old Testament — while they were still young. If they

Stand on His Promises

“It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.” – Psalm 18:32 Well, 2021 has gotten off to a bit of a rough start. As the COVID pandemic continues to rage and political strife runs rampant, it’s important to remember and consistently focus on the source of our strength. The events of this troubling time can be an energy drain since it seems as if everything is more difficult than it used to be. It’s easy to get bogged down and pulled under by the “bad news” of the day, but thankfully, Jesus offers us a much better alternative! In fact, the Bible says that He arms us with strength. That’s an interesting way of saying it because it infers that our spiritual toughness is a weapon, which further implies that our spirits are under attack. We are not our own worst enemies — Satan is,

Set Apart

“You will become pregnant and have a son whose head is never to be touched by a razor because the boy is to be a Nazirite, dedicated to God from the womb. He will take the lead in delivering Israel from the hands of the Philistines.” – Judges 13:5 When we look at those in the Bible who adhered to the ancient Nazarite vow, there’s perhaps none as famous as Samson. This Herculean man of enormous physical strength was consecrated for the work of God when he was born, and from the time he was young, it was “drilled” into his mind that he was not to touch any dead thing, to drink any wine, or to cut his hair. While he understood that he was a warrior set apart to save the Israelites from the Philistines, he was fascinated by the culture of his enemies and found himself constantly

Authenticity Over Appearance

“So all the people went to Gilgal and made Saul king in the presence of the Lord. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings before the Lord, and Saul and all the Israelites held a great celebration.” – 1 Samuel 11:15 Today, I want to begin talking about the story of David and Goliath, which happens to be one of the most famous and taught passages in the Bible. However, contrary to popular belief, I don’t think this tale is a miracle story as much as it is a moral story. That said, before we dive into learning about the characters in the account, here’s some important historical background. Though they were under the Lordship of Almighty God, the Jews wanted a king so as to be more like the other nations of the earth — they desired to have a human figurehead to represent them. Commissioned to appoint their first ruler,
