Calling

Don’t Be Fooled by Smoke and Mirrors

“Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them.” – Jonah 2:8 The story of Jonah and the whale is a powerful testament to God’s goodness and mercy. Jonah was called by God during the bronze age of the Akkadian Assyrian empire, which was brutal and full of villains. Citizens of this kingdom were oppressed by their kings, so God told Jonah to go tell the citizens of Nineveh to repent. In contrast, Jonah traveled in the opposite direction and a huge whale swallowed him. That sea monster seemed like punishment, but it was actually God’s mercy. It is what keeps Jonah from drowning and brings him back to Nineveh. As a result, God reinstated his calling. During his time in this whale, Jonah said some of scripture’s most profound words. In the King James Version of the above scripture, he said, “Those who observe lying

A Call Goes Out

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’ ” – Isaiah 6:8 Today we conclude our look into the life of Isaiah with one concluding question. After encountering God’s theophany in the temple; a call goes out. This call is not just to Isaiah but to the thousands of people who are worshiping in the temple. And what is the question? All God says is, ”Who will go for us? Whom shall I send?” Imagine everyone frozen at the sound of this question. Experts say that when people are terrified, 10 percent of people run away, 10 percent stand up into a leadership position and tell people what to do, but 80 percent of people just freeze.  I imagine everyone is frozen except for Isaiah, who has now had this unconscious

Become a Conqueror

“It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.” – Romans 4:13 I have a great question for you today: Is it ever too late for God to turn someone into a conqueror? The answer is no! At any age, we can wake up and choose to embrace a new vision or calling from God. For instance, Abraham, the Hebrew patriarch, was 75 years old when he received the promise to be the father of many nations. He was 100 years old when that promise was birthed through his son Issac. I would love to find out how Abraham kept up his vigor, and what his routine of vitamins, healthy food, and exercise was!  In addition, Moses was 80 years old when he saw the burning bush, and God

Called to Take a Risk

“ ‘So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.’ But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?’ ” – Exodus 3:10,11 As we look at the call of Moses, it appears very dramatic. As God summons Moses, he encounters the burning bush which was on fire but not consumed. In this exchange, God instructs Moses to go and speak to Pharoah and set His people free. Moses says, “Who am I to do that?” And then God says, “You can do it.“ Moses then expresses his doubts about his ability to fulfill the assignment: “Who will I say sent me? What if they don’t believe me? And oh, by the way, I stutter!” Out of fear, Moses pleads with God to send someone else. When we feel

Relax and Trust God

“The word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.’ ” – Jeremiah 1:4,5 Today, we examine the call of Jeremiah, which will help us to understand our callings. Jeremiah Chapter 1, states: “The word of the Lord came to me, saying ‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.’ ” Friend, take a moment to let this sink in: God knew before you were born that you would do great things in your life. As we reflect on the greatness before us, it’s easy to say, “I’m too old, young, divorced,” or, “I messed up.” We can all say, “I have issues!” But despite

Be Faithful in Your Calling

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ ” – Matthew 25:21 Today, as we continue to uncover what your calling is, it’s not uncommon to have two or more callings at the same time! It is understood that God will give us multiple missions. Does your boss ever give you two assignments at the same time? Most likely, yes. In life, it’s important that we understand which of the two or three things is most important to God. Right now, I have at least two callings. I’m called to be the pastor of this ministry and I’m also called to be a husband and a dad. Which one is more important? Family is the number one priority, but at times we get this confused. It’s

Your Great Calling

“With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith.” – 2 Thessalonians 1:11 Today, as we continue examining what your calling is, I want you to know that not only do you have a great calling, but you also have many callings. We’re not born to have one grand final calling. All of us are called to do many things, and all of those things are meaningful and have value. If they’re from God, they’re going to unfold into the next mission and the pursuit after that.  Finding your calling is a bit like eating a cinnamon roll, which is one of my favorite desserts! The best part of the cinnamon roll is the core. That’s the crown

What is Your Calling?

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:45 Today I want to answer the question that so many people ask: What is my calling? In this series, we will unfold many aspects concerning this important topic. It’s a question you may continually ask, especially when you feel like you’re in a rut, in a middle or gray area, or maybe you just lost your job. Or, perhaps you’ve been at your job for a long time and you used to love it, but now you no longer enjoy it. It still pays well, but you’re unsatisfied and maybe you’re ready to do something else. You pray, “God, I’m thankful for this assignment, but was I born to do this? What is my true calling?” The heart of this question signifies

God Does Not Disqualify You

“He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.‘ ” – Mark 16:15 If you’re a believer in Jesus Christ, you are called to an assignment here on Earth. God loves to call people who everyone else thinks are unworthy; outwardly they don’t appear qualified for the calling they have received. Also, many of us want to disqualify ourselves because we feel unworthy, uneducated, or disenfranchised. We feel called, but others have dismissed us because they don’t share God’s vision for our lives. I want you to know that God does not disqualify you and that your personal failures do not disqualify you! I want to encourage you today by repeating the words that Jesus gave in His last commandment to His disciples, to “GO!” In Mark Chapter 16, Jesus admonished his disciples, “Go, therefore, into all the world, and preach the Gospel.”

Jesus Calls the Unlikely

“As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me,’ he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.” – Matthew 9:9 I enjoy exploring how Jesus called His disciples to follow Him. One of the most amazing things about Jesus is He called unlikely people who you wouldn’t think would be considered. My favorite is the calling of Matthew, the tax collector. Matthew gives his own account of this calling by Jesus in the Book of Matthew. In Jesus’ day, tax collectors were seen as outsiders and traitors. Today’s tax collectors have rules that you follow; you hire an accountant or use an online platform, you fill out all your forms, and pay your taxes. At times you may not appreciate the taxes that are due! Some think their taxes are too high, but most people would say
