I grew up thinking it meant sinful because of The Prodigal Son parable in the Bible, but it doesn’t. It means either overly generous or wasteful in your spending. Today we will look at the parable in the Bible we label The Prodigal Son, but call it The Prodigal Father instead. “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” – Luke 15:7 In Luke 15, Jesus told the pharisees the parable about a shepherd who had 100 sheep. One day, he took the sheep to the pasture, and realized there were only 99. So the shepherd immediately left them there, and went off with the other shepherds to find the missing one. Picture this: a shepherd out in the hills, in the elements, looking for his one lost sheep. He knows the sheep by name, so he’s walking around and calling his name out.
