Glory

Fame is Fleeting

“For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.” – Matthew 16:27 There are choices that we make in life concerning what really matters. Our families, our peers, or cultural icons can influence these choices. If you are led to seek fame and recognition, understand that people will forget you! Our staff of about 70 has at least ten to twelve people under the age of 30. Due to the generation gap, there are times we older folks mention famous people that the younger generation has never heard of. Last year, I made a list of famous personalities and asked those under 30 to rate their familiarity with those names, and it was fascinating. The names on the list have made significant contributions to culture, some of them even internationally,

You’ll Do Greater Things

“Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” – John 14:11-13 Do you believe you can do the works that Jesus did? Do you believe you can do even greater things? The Bible says that because Jesus has gone to His Father, you have been granted authority to do signs, wonders, and miracles! Isn’t that an awesome thought? Because you live in the Kingdom of God, anything is possible! Pastors who teach that miracles don’t happen anymore

Seeing God’s Glory

“Then Moses said, ‘Now show me your glory.’ And the Lord said, ‘I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. But,’ he said, ‘you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.’ ” – Exodus 33:18-20 As we look at the life of Moses, we discover how much he desired and loved the presence of God. Even though he and the Lord communed regularly in their special place, Moses couldn’t look at the Lord’s face, and this is why he requested to see His glory. Interestingly, Yahweh’s response to His friend was to tell him that if he were to behold Him fully, he wouldn’t survive. Though he didn’t get

Don’t Veil Your Fading Glory

“We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away.” – 2 Corinthians 3:13 There is great value in living a glorious life for God and understanding what it means to have the glory of God within you. In life, there will be glories that you’ll have that are worldly glories, and that’s ok. However, no matter who you are, these glories will fade over time. A few months ago, I went around our church campus and showed pictures of celebrities to our younger staff members. These were all very famous people and easily recognizable to my peers. It amazed me how many of the celebrities were unrecognizable to the younger generation — they had no clue who they were! This exercise poignantly illustrates that no matter who you are, we will all experience

Excuses Don’t Cultivate Excellence

“Then the Lord said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.’ Now Cain said to his brother Abel, ‘Let’s go out to the field.’ While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.” – Genesis 4:6-8 Yesterday we looked at the story of Cain and Abel and how we can learn what it means to give God our best and not our leftovers. Today, I want to talk about one more thing from their story that can help us to excel in our work — don’t make excuses. Interestingly, after God rejected Cain’s sacrifice, he gave him a chance to do better — to

The Call is Not to Comfort

“The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’ And whether they listen or fail to listen—for they are a rebellious people—they will know that a prophet has been among them.” – Ezekiel 2:4,5 Yesterday, we saw that God met Ezekiel in the middle of a season of exile with a divine vision that led him to his call as a prophet. Because the Israelites in Babylon were blatantly rebelling against their Heavenly Father in acts of idolatry and paganism (such as child sacrifice and temple prostitution), He needed to warn them that judgment was coming if they didn’t change their ways. Always faithful and long-suffering, the Lord chose to speak through Ezekiel to give the Jews a chance to turn from evil and return to His heart. Following the Holy Spirit’s prompts, the prophet faithfully delivered

The Vitality in Vision

“In my thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.” – Ezekiel 1:1 Yesterday, we talked about Ezekiel and how he was captured by the Babylonians when he was just 25 years old. After spending five years in a strange city wondering if the Lord had forgotten him, he finally got a glimpse of what His Creator was up to. As he sat by the banks of the Kebar River with his fellow exiles from Jerusalem — probably feeling sad since this was the time he was supposed to come into his own as a priest — he saw something greater than he could ever have fathomed. In fact, with no warning, the heavens opened up before him and he beheld a vision of glory. While at first

Glory

“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.”  – Hebrews 6:10 When Jesus began preaching the idea of serving the least of these, it was not the norm. In Jesus’ day, He was in Palestine in the region of the Roman Empire that really nobody cared about. It was the outskirts … it wasn’t really an economic zone, and it was just a buffer between Roman Empire and Persia. In the Roman world, Rome was obviously at the heart of the city. And in Rome, it was all about glory and fame. Romans believed that living the biggest life possible — being the most famous and most remembered person ever —  was the greatest thing you could do. They believed, if I could do so many great things in my

Glory

“To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy — to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.” -Jude 24-25
