Designing Your Life

“The Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad. Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success!” – Psalm 118:23-25 In grade school, I discovered the power of zero, but thankfully, we don’t have to experience it as Christians. Let me explain. Zero is a powerful number. Take any number you can think of; multiply it times zero, and the answer is zero. A valuable lesson I learned in school was the day I turned in four assignments and one of them was graded a zero. For the first three assignments, I received A’s. The fourth one was a zero because somehow I forgot to turn it in. And what does that make the total grade for my class? The answer is a D. You get A, A, A, and one zero turns

Define God’s Promises

“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God.” – 2 Corinthians 1:20 It is so important to clearly define the promises God has for you. I cannot express enough how essential it is to take an abstract idea, like the promised land, and convert it into a concrete, specific, and date-marked thing you want to achieve. However, when I talk to people about writing down goals or making goals for their life, most people don’t want to do it. You may feel annoyed and uncomfortable over the thought of writing down your goals. You’re probably saying to yourself, “That does not sound fun at all!” On my 30th birthday, a group of us were celebrating. It was a tough time in my life. One friend asked me, “Bobby, what

Don’t Get Lost in Temptation

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13 Today, I would like you to consider this: Long-term goals are easily lost by today’s temptations. The Apostle Paul shared three areas of temptation. The first is idols. What does this mean for us today? I define Idols using the classical meaning of materialism, which is when people think the only thing that exists, matters, or is worth their attention, is only what they can see or feel. The next temptation is to give into the flesh. This means a pattern of giving in and giving up. For example, I just give in to watching TV all day long or buying

Become a Giant Slayer

“The Lord your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross over ahead of you, as the Lord said.” – Deuteronomy 31:3 Yesterday we referenced the Promised Land, a special place for God’s chosen people who were freed from slavery, who had to walk across a vast desert to enter a land flowing with prosperity. When those enslaved people entered the Promised Land, there was one caveat I forgot to mention. It was full of giants. See, God will take you to the promised land, but you have to become a giant slayer on your way there.  We must understand that the beneficiality of the big goals God has for your life is not just what you achieve; it’s who you become. The promised land is set aside for giant slayers

A Promise in Your Heart

“And I have promised to bring you up out of your misery in Egypt into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.” – Exodus 3:17 Over the next few days, I will share the value and importance of having concrete, long-term goals for your life and how this is a significant objective that God wants for us. It’s called the promised land, and it’s a major cure for what ails many of us today. If you want to get to the promised land in your life, you cannot fix your eyes on the desert, the weather, the scorpions, and the sand.  What is the promised land? In the Bible, the Promised Land was a special place God had for a special people who had been freed from slavery and who had to walk across a desert to enter a place

The Art of Being Unoffendable

“A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.” – Proverbs 19:11 If you’re looking for a superpower to achieve great things in life, here’s one: become unoffendable. As we continue examining the woman of great faith found in Matthew Chapter 15, we can see that she was unoffendable! This woman made a scene that became embarrassing to the disciples of Jesus. In desperation, she was begging loudly for Jesus to heal her daughter. His disciples urged Him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” This mother cared more about receiving her miracle than her ego. One commentator of this passage stated: “She was too desperate to take offense.” How desperate are you to receive answers from the Lord? How crucial is it for you to achieve that dream or goal laid before you? Do you want it so bad that you

The Win is in the Waiting

“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” – Psalm 27:14 Today, I want to encourage you that “The win is in the waiting.” We can describe what it means to win in life in many different ways. We often think success is when you cross the finish line or when you hit the high C note in a song. The win could be when you receive a trophy or that long-awaited promotion. Perhaps achievement is when you’re invited to perform in the place you’ve always wanted to. But the truth is, the win happens before any triumphs are accomplished. The win is becoming a person who can fulfill the successes you have longed for.  The process we endure in becoming accomplished usually happens when no one is watching. In your free time, when others are scrolling on their phones or tablets, you choose

Faith Builds Dreams

“By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care.” – 1 Corinthians 3:10 We’ve all had dreams for our future, whether it’s regarding our businesses, careers, ministry, and of course our families. But the question is, how can you build these God-given dreams and aspirations? Faith opens our whole life, much like a hand opens to embrace a friend. Similarly, faith opens our hearts to the Kingdom of God to pursue our dreams, and to love and serve our neighbors. How can you have an idea that’s bigger than you if you don’t have faith?  Our dreams give us a reason to wake up in the morning and also something to live for. I know there is something you can picture in your mind that if you were able to

Home Base of Grace

“Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” – John 1:16,17 I spoke to you yesterday about the crucial understanding that you are not what you do. Today, I want to expand on that idea by assuring you that you are enough. I understand that saying this at the beginning of the year when you’ve just established objectives and resolutions that require you to run faster and strive harder, sounds bizarre. I’m not dismissing those ideas; in fact, I wholeheartedly believe in them. However, I am confident that if you do not first receive God’s grace and then extend it to yourself, you will not be able to accomplish your goals. Remember that grace is not just mercy; it’s God’s overflowing love and favor toward His Son, which He

You’re Not What You Do

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” – Ephesians 2:8,9 Well, the holidays have passed, and many of you will have returned to your regular routine by today. You may return to your office to find an inbox full of messages from folks who require your assistance. There may even be a desire to become overwhelmed and frustrated at the start of the year. If you’re feeling this way, please remember one thing: you are not what you do. Even if you’re still on vacation and haven’t yet returned to the grind, I encourage you to think about this crucial concept. Many people who grew up in religious households are shocked to learn that they are not what they do. In fact, I was asked to
