“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30 If you grew up in church or have been listening to my sermons for any length of time, you have probably heard me talk about Jesus’ easy yoke. But do you know what a yoke is? In Jewish culture, a yoke was a device used to join two oxen together so they could work side-by-side in the field. For maximum productivity, the technique was to take a young ox who had a lot of energy but didn’t know what to do, and yoke him to an older, calmer ox who knew how to plow the field.
