Ready, Fire, Aim

“Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house.” – Proverbs 24:27 “Ready, fire, aim,” seems out of sequence, doesn’t it? Of course we are all familiar with the well-known expression “Ready, aim, fire.” Put in a different context, it’s my opinion that “Ready, fire, aim” is the best way to live your life. It’s a Schuller habit I have adopted in my life. I think that there is something about being ready — you feel a little bit more prepared when you are ready. When it comes to fire, you do what needs to be done. If you miss your aim, you go back and you correct what you have done wrong. As we discussed yesterday, it is essential that you act upon the knowledge that you have gained and apply it to your daily life. As a result of this action,

Obey the Spirit’s Promptings

“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” – 2 Timothy 1:7 One of the things I love most about children is their purity of heart and the way it manifests in a lack of fear. Because they haven’t been beaten up by the world, their outlook is simple and they are willing to do things for others that you and I might not. When my daughter Haven was seven years old, our then-children’s pastor asked her and the other Sunday school students to invite their friends to church to see a Christmas program they were putting on. Taking his request quite seriously, Haven printed invitations for every student in her first grade class and hand-delivered them to each classmate along with a verbal invitation to come and hear about Jesus. Though I wasn’t totally surprised, it delighted me to

The Spirit of God is Always Speaking

“‘Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.’ When he said this, he called out, ‘Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.’ ” – Luke 8:8 Yesterday, we discussed how God communicates with us through our spiritual antennas. The spirit of God is always speaking and you can catch it if you tune in. The above verse is part of a parable where Jesus said that a sower (God) throws seeds almost carelessly everywhere. Guess what He says those seeds are? The seeds are words! Luke 8:5-8 describes the types of soil and harvest of those seeds. “…some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. Other seeds fell among thorns, which

God’s Promise of Joy

“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.” – John 17:13 In the next several Positive Minutes, we will explore how to weave the important threads of experiencing God’s joy, into the fabric of our lives. Did you know that joy is a part of God’s promise to us? It’s in the Bible. It’s a part of the promise of our new life in Christ, and it’s not just something we get when we go to Heaven. It’s actually something that you get when Heaven goes into you. This means that joy is there when the Holy Spirit dwells inside our hearts and bodies, even if we’re going through personal turmoil and trials.  When we experience God’s joy but fall into adversity there is something inside us

Just Go!

“…and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He told them: ‘Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.’ ” – Luke 9:2,3 Today I want to emphasize that God has amazing provision for you and I. That’s why Jesus tells His disciples in Luke Chapters 9 and 10: “Just go and don’t take anything with you.” And at the end, He says, “Were you ever in need?” And they said, “Never Lord, never.” As we live by faith, we can do bold things for God! Hannah and I have a strong testimony of God’s provision. Some time ago, we saved $50,000 for our retirement over a span of 10 years. It was more money than we ever thought we could save. God called us to plant a church, and we did. When we established

Stay Focused on the Dream

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” – Genesis 50:20 As we conclude this series about dreamers today, allow me to reiterate that dreams from God will annoy people and get you in trouble, but so what! Joseph had two significant dreams: ”We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.” Also, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.” As God brought Joseph’s dreams to fulfillment, I don’t think he pictured becoming the Grand-vizier of Egypt, but God did. Joseph had no idea that the gauntlet of betrayal, suffering, deception, and abandonment, were all preparing him for the moment of saving many lives.

A God-Given Dream

“Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. He said to them, ‘Listen to this dream I had:’ ” – Genesis 37:5-6 Today, as we continue talking about dreams and dreamers in the Bible, we can’t leave out Joseph! Joseph was the first son of the Patriarch Jacob and Rachel. He had eleven other half brothers, yet he was the favored son. This was evidenced by an ornate coat given to him by his father — a symbol of favor and blessing. In addition to the coat of blessing, Joseph has many qualities to be envied. The Bible tells us he was a handsome guy, but he was also really friendly and loving. But what finally pushes this family over the edge is when God gives Joseph a dream. He shared the dream: “We were binding sheaves of grain out

Jesus Wants to Be With You

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;” – 1 Corinthians 6:19 Did you know that God wants to be with you? In Jesus’ day, The House, or temple, was the place where people gathered to be with God, the Father. This House of God was a symbol of God’s love and grace for us. Throughout all the Old and the New Testaments, you constantly see God desperately wanting to be with His people. Sometimes His people are with Him, and other times they sin and fall away. Maybe you feel this way at times.  The temple was also where you could make atonement or reconciliation for your sins. If you have hurt someone or made a damaging mistake, you can be reconnected with God. It’s truly representative of how

Renovate Your House

“I will be careful to lead a blameless life — when will you come to me? I will conduct the affairs of my house with a blameless heart.” – Psalm 101:2 Home renovation has become a popular movement in our culture. There’s several TV shows, and even video games, dedicated to it! There are people who renovate their home with the premise that it’s going to be their forever home, and then you have house flippers who have no intention of moving in. Jesus wants to help us renovate our spiritual house — the home we’re living in.  Speaking of renovating, we used to do a lot of social work at a church we pastored. The police would call us when they found a pack rat. We went to a home where the police couldn’t get to a lady who had a heart attack; it was that bad. Our church

Nothing is Impossible for You

“The Lord said, ‘If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.’ ” – Genesis 11:6 People have been obsessed with the story of the Tower of Babel, and I think it’s because there are many interesting aspects to this Bible lesson. I think one of the most fascinating things from this ancient account is when God proclaims, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.” Did you know that Jesus repeated this phrase? In Mark chapter nine, Jesus states, “Everything is possible for one who believes.”  After the great flood, Noah’s children and generations thereafter became evil, but because they had one language, they created a unified, yet flawed plan to reach God. They decide to
