Holy Spirit

Celebrate the Gift

“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” – Acts 2:4 In continuation from yesterday, Pentecost is a Christian celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit through the miracle of speaking in tongues. In the Jewish tradition, it began with scripture readings at 9:00 a.m.. It is traditionally taught that the gift was given in what people call the upper room. This is mentioned in the first chapter of Acts as the place the disciples were gathered. The disciples were actually assembled in the temple or in the house as the Jews would say. This is where the Christian holiday of Pentecost was birthed as mentioned in Acts chapter two. Imagine the crowd of thousands of people being drawn into God’s house, as they heard the sound of all of them being filled with the Holy

Let’s be Filled with the Holy Spirit

“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’ ” – John 4:13,14 In a world filled with so many distractions, let’s be filled with the Holy Spirit instead. Let’s stop wondering what’s the next big thing that will make us feel happy or satisfy our personal desires. When my life isn’t going so well, there’s only one thing that’s certain to bring me joy and a smile on my face, and that is my relationship with God. Being filled with the spirit of God means he is living in my bones! He’s breathing in my lungs; working in my hands and feet; and seeing through my eyes. And maybe most importantly, speaking through my mouth.  If you

A God-Shaped Vacuum

“…let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.” – Hebrews 10:22 Within every man and woman, there is a deep inner “well” that can only be filled with God’s Holy Spirit. In our world today, there is an obvious inner desperation that people have. Many are looking for ways to quench this inner thirst, to satiate this desire for God. But in today’s world, so many look to everything else but God and oftentimes fall into a sense of nihilism, which is an extreme skepticism about existence and religious or moral principles. Others chronically need a movement to be a part of, or have reached the pinnacle of success in their career, yet the ability to feel fulfilled still doesn’t come.

God Gave the Gift

“As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning.” – Acts 11:15-17 Imagine Peter, who’s the leader of the church in Jerusalem, being invited to dine with Cornelius, a centurion who the Bible describes as a righteous man. Cornelius has a connection with God and wants to be drawn into the faith, but doesn’t know what to do. He wants to eat with Peter, but Peter is reluctant to do so because he’s a Gentile. To facilitate this encounter, Peter has a vision from God, and God says “don’t call unclean what I have called clean.” So Peter eats with Cornelius and the gang, and they become Gentile Christians. This is an important moment in the Acts of the Apostles. When Peter returns home and tells people that he’s eaten with these Gentiles and that the Holy Spirit came

Hearing the Voice of the Beloved

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27 I would like to talk about one of the most important aspects of living the life Christ offers us. Jesus makes it clear this is something every Christian should do, and that is hearing God’s voice. The voice of the Beloved — God is speaking to us right now, right where we are.  God has a word for you today. That word might come through me, but more likely it will come directly to you, by Him. When we come across someone who hears God’s voice, many of us think of them as being special, a little strange, or super spiritual. But actually, they have an openness to the spirit.  The truth is, God loves to talk to everybody. And when I say He loves to talk to everybody, I don’t mean just Christians.

Overcoming Injustice

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.” – Colossians 3:23-25 Yesterday, we talked about God’s view of injustice and slavery and we looked at how His love for us never wavers, even when we are being mistreated. Today, I want to talk about how this is possible.  Viktor Frankl, an Austrian Jew who was imprisoned in a concentration camp during the Second World War, once wrote about his experience that, “The one thing they can’t take away from me is my ability to choose how I will respond.” This is the same sentiment that Paul asserts when he writes the

Carried by His Currents

“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” – John 3:8 We talked about how the winters in our lives provide us with force and strength the other day. Today, I want to remind you that a winter storm is always blown away by the wind, ushering in a new season. You can feel the Holy Spirit blowing through you as you grow in your connection with Jesus, just like the grass moves with the power of fresh breeze. As you become closer to Him, you’ll be able to hear His voice more clearly and understand where He’s taking you, but with the knowledge that He’ll be the one driving you. If you find yourself lying awake at night wondering what you should have done or

Scripture in the Morning

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” – Romans 15:4 I shared the second stage in my “morning meditation,” which includes prayer, with you yesterday. Today, I’m going to tell you about the third thing I do every day, which is read the Bible. After connecting with Jesus through prayer, I notice that my heart is prepared to study His Word and that I recognize things that I would not have seen otherwise. I underline the text and ask a lot of questions as I read. In essence, I strive to be as engaged with what I’m reading as possible. I usually read one Old Testament chapter and one New Testament chapter, and then I always read the Proverb for the day. Because there are 31

Praying in the Morning

“Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.” – 1 Chronicles 16:11 Yesterday, we discussed how having a routine may be very valuable as we strive to become rooted and grounded individuals who thrive in turmoil. I’m hoping that by sharing the five steps of my “morning meditation,” you’ll be inspired to create your own, since I feel it will help you grow in the Lord and empower you to be a more powerful influence in the world. In our last devotional, I mentioned how meditation is the first stage in my morning ritual, and how it easily leads to the second component, prayer. Reflecting on a passage of Scripture and lifting up the Name of Jesus in worship generates a lovely Spiritual atmosphere that makes it simple to just begin talking to Him. Now, I don’t have a set prayer formula, but I do pray for

Jesus Yields All Power

“The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.” – Proverbs 15:3 We discussed yesterday how we have an enemy that is fixated on destroying believers before his eventual demise. Today, I want to provide another perspective on this: the devil may have his eye on you because God has chosen you to accomplish great things. My grandfather, Robert H. Schuller, is well-known to most of you. He was a magnificent man of God, and while he didn’t typically speak about Satan, he talked about spiritual battle, the Holy Spirit, and angels all the time behind the scenes. I recall one particular conversation I had with him about this issue. It was in college, and I was completely devoted to God. He was becoming older and required assistance from time to time, so I walked after him carrying his baggage. We were driving somewhere
