Hope

Losing the Battle Isn’t Losing the War

“You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” – Hebrews 10:36 In the Kingdom of God, just because we lose a battle, it doesn’t mean we’ve lost the war! Life is full of setbacks, and the forces of discouragement are raging to get us to surrender our hope. Nevertheless, we must persevere. Many good things have been forfeited by Christians who lost their grit and gave up because they were discouraged by what they saw. This is why it’s important to remember that faith is confidence in things hoped for and certainty in things unseen. Even when we endure loss, hardship, and disappointment, there is still joy and a future for us — we just need to keep believing. No matter how many trials come our way, our Savior will never abandon us, and He is using

God Works Slowly

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” – 2 Peter 3:9 I’m passionate about history, and one of my favorite periods to study is the Bronze Age, which is when most of the Old Testament took place. Back then, armies were huge — often made up of hundreds of thousands of soldiers — and because they were equipped with a lot of weaponry and manpower, they traveled at a snail’s pace. It would take months for them to move from place to place because hundreds of chariots, livestock, water carriers, and other equipment accompanied them. And though they couldn’t get anywhere fast, when they finally reached their destination, they were a force to be reckoned with. I actually think this is a great analogy for how the

A Kingdom Perspective

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Matthew 6:33 I know this verse is familiar, and that’s good, because it’s really important, especially in the times in which we’re living. After watching the world be turned upside down by an unexpected pandemic and witnessing the instability and heartache it’s caused on many levels, a lot of us have been forced to embrace a paradigm shift. Much of what we’ve put our hope in for a long time has been removed, and the Lord has peeled back the layers of worldly security that we unknowingly held on to. In the absence of certainty in the areas of health, freedom, and finances, we’ve come face-to-face with not knowing what the future holds — and my prayer is that it’s driven us straight to the heart of God. You see,

Outgoing and Enthusiastic

“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 14:17 A while back, I interviewed an old friend of mine named Earl Lamar. He was the chairman of the board for Hour of Power in Australia, and he’s just a fascinating guy who’s had a lot of wins in life and business. He started out as a church musician, but ultimately, he became an accountant and made some great deals in real estate. His financial prowess set him up to support a lot of wonderful causes, and interestingly, he attributes a good deal of his success to the teachings of Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, who also had a big influence on my Grandpa Schuller. He shared with me that Dr. Peale talked frequently about two important things that lead to prosperity — outgoingness and

Great and Precious Promises

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” – 2 Peter 1:3,4 As we conclude our discussion about embracing a journey to spiritual and emotional healing, I want to leave us with one practical thing we can do as we wait — stand on God’s promises. I know this sounds trite, but before tuning it out, it’s important to chew on the fact that the Word of God is alive. It’s not just a book that we read chapter and verse (though we certainly should do that), it’s the power of the Living Lord to accomplish His

Your Mess Can Be Blessed

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” – Psalm 42:11 Yesterday, we learned that we can’t pick and choose our emotions and that in order to experience all of the good the Lord has for us, we must be willing to wade through the hard stuff, too. That said, we need to know up front that things probably will get worse before they get better. Most of us are inherently aware of this truth, and that’s why we remain stuck in patterns of dysfunction. Somehow, we know that going deep will be a process, and we feel like we don’t have the bandwidth to embark on the journey. However, if we’re grappling with these thoughts, the single most important thing we can do is put our trust in God. His mercies

You Are the High Bidder

“Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?” – James 2:5 I really loved my Grandma and Grandpa Schuller, and I also really loved spending time at their house. In fact, some of my fondest memories revolve around family gatherings in that special place, and it was a source of major sadness when they both passed away and the property was sold. Worse yet, their belongings were listed in an online auction, so even family members had to pay for the things they wanted. As you can imagine, it felt strange to spend money buying back their stuff, but there were a couple items I knew I needed to have. One was a VHS tape of my grandpa giving a Christmas sermon

Daily Victory

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.’” – 1 Corinthians 1:18,19 There’s no doubt that the times we’re living in are challenging. In the past eighteen months, we’ve dealt with things we previously couldn’t have fathomed, and our faith, principles, and beliefs have been tested. That said, there’s never been a better time than now to focus on the upside-down nature of God’s Kingdom. The teachings of Jesus are a source of hope and illumination, and when we’re facing adversity, only He can truly bring about triumph. However, in order to see His best manifest, we must apply ourselves to some pretty counterintuitive principles. First of all, we must recognize that

The Ancient of Days

“As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze.” – Daniel 7:9 Yesterday, we discussed the world’s system and how Satan is waging war all around us in the kingdoms of the earth. Today, I want to talk about the good news we can cling to — that there is One greater than the devil! Further along in his vision in Daniel 7, the prophet, after seeing four hideous, terrifying, and powerful beasts, speaks of a throne of fire being set in place and the Ancient of Days ascending it to execute judgment. Interestingly, the Lord is often represented by fire in the Old Testament because the heat of flames purifies and their presence consumes.

The World’s System

“After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast — terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.” – Daniel 7:7 It’s safe to say that the world’s way is beastly. Ever since humanity fell into sin, the forces of darkness have been raging to orchestrate chaos and stir up violence. Throughout all of history, kingdoms have risen against each other and war has been commonplace. Of course, behind every mass movement of anarchy, disorder, or crime stands Satan — the Beast himself. It was his image that Daniel saw in the vision recorded in Daniel 7, wherein he took the form of four brutal monsters, each representing a worldly government under the sway
