“Because He Lives”: Life is Worth the Living

Dawning the Hour of Power stage last Easter, Marla Kavanaugh graced us with her operatic vocals a beautiful rendition of “Because He Lives,” accompanied by Dr. Marc Riley and the Hour of Power Orchestra. While this song perfect compliments the Easter season, it can be encouraging all year round. It was written by Gloria and William J. Gather in 1971, during a time of societal distress, when negative headlines of assassination and war clogged the media and the minds of all who read them. During this time, Gloria and William were expecting their third child. It was because of this miracle they were able to clear a path within their troubled minds to write the clarifying lyrics: How sweet to hold our newborn baby, And feel the pride, and joy he gives; But greater still the calm assurance, This child can face uncertain day because He lives The assurance that

About the Music: “Let There Be Peace on Earth”

We are so blessed by our Voices of Hope Children’s Choir! Here they are performing their rendition of “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” accompanied by the Hour of Power Choir and Orchestra. This beautiful anthem was developed in 1955, with the words written by Jill Jackson and the melody by her husband, Sy Miller. Jill, after having experienced a sharp dip in her depression which led to her attempted — and failed — suicide, her heart then opened wide and willing to God’s unconditional love. She discovered from that moment on that she has a purpose, and her life and talent for music were valuable. A decade later, Sy and Jill went to a California retreat in the mountains where they met an array of young people with various socioeconomic, religious, and ethnic backgrounds. This week-long retreat was dedicated to exploring friendship through education and conversation. Introducing their song

“People Get Ready”: Get Ready, Your Chance is Coming

On Sunday April 30, 2017, Rory Deming and Josh Elmore graced the Shepherd’s Grove and Hour of Power stage with an inspirational rendition of the powerful Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready,” accompanied by the Hour of Power orchestra. “People Get Ready” has a powerful story in terms of its historical significance. It was written by Mayfield in the year after the March on Washington. Its release also followed the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham. During this painful time, a message of forgiveness and optimism burned brightly through Mayfield’s writings. The significance of this rings true through its lyrics: People get ready, there’s a train a-comin’ You don’t need no baggage, you just get on board Each word extending beyond societal differences throughout time, the song delivers a message of redemption for all. It encourages those who feel lost
