Who Governs Your Mind?

“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” – Romans 8:6 While the term government may not evoke positive emotions for many of us who hear it nowadays, when we look at it objectively, the word govern simply has to do with making and enforcing laws or policy. In short, it means to preside or to rule over something or someone. Therefore, when we examine Romans 8:6, the inference is that our minds — or the part of us that controls our reasoning, thoughts, and intellect — has a ruler or a governor. Someone or something tells us what to do and how to behave, and the Apostle Paul explains that there are two possible directors for this activity: the flesh and the Holy Spirit. It may be helpful to think of these “rulers” of our reason as a

Leading Is Loving People

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” – Philippians 2:3,4 We have a family friend named Glenn Stearns, who happens to be a billionaire. In a strange turn of events, my dad officiated his wedding over a decade ago, and since then, he’s become dear to us. In 2019, he starred in his own T.V. show called Undercover Billionaire, which aired on the Discovery Channel. The goal of the program was to showcase the American spirit and to prove that with the right attitude and team, a profitable business can be grown just about anywhere. That said, Glenn was sent to Erie, Pennsylvania with $100 in his pocket, a pickup truck, and a cell phone with no contacts, and tasked with building a million dollar

Stubborn Where It Counts

“To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.” – Romans 2:7 Have you ever been told that you’re stubborn? I sure have — in fact, I’ve heard it many times. And though most people tend to think such a description is a bad thing, I really don’t see it that way. There are certain areas of life in which it’s beneficial to be persistent and tenacious, especially when it comes to achieving goals and doing the right thing; however, there’s a catch. We should be stubborn for good things but soft toward people. In other words, be stubborn for our vision but soft toward our team, and stubborn for our jobs but soft toward our families. Though mules are thought to be obstinate and unyielding, they are also sweet and compassionate, and this is how we should be as well.

Embrace Change

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1 As humans, we don’t like change. Therefore, we often fail to recognize and embrace the necessity of endings. Yet the truth is that if we want to be people who constantly press forward and grow into the good things God has for us, we will be faced with transitions that require us to intentionally close our current chapter. Though this is a natural part of life, the shifting of seasons inevitably brings feelings of loss and anxiety, so many of us shy away from it. When we seize change — whether it’s switching jobs, joining a new church, or walking away from a toxic relationship — it causes mixed emotions. As Christians, we know that God is constantly making things new, so when He leads us forward, it’s exciting. On the other

God Sees the Heart

“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’” – 1 Samuel 16:7 Yesterday, we learned about Saul and how, though he had all the worldly makings of a king, he was given over to arrogance that compromised his ability to lead. In fact, so upset was the Lord with his failure to govern justly that He decided a new ruler needed to be chosen. Once again, Samuel was appointed to find the right person for the job, so he headed over to the house of Jesse, who happened to have eight fine sons. When he arrived at their home, Jesse’s family nervously greeted the great man of God, wondering if he had come in peace.
