Jesus Calls the Unlikely

“As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me,’ he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.” – Matthew 9:9 I enjoy exploring how Jesus called His disciples to follow Him. One of the most amazing things about Jesus is He called unlikely people who you wouldn’t think would be considered. My favorite is the calling of Matthew, the tax collector. Matthew gives his own account of this calling by Jesus in the Book of Matthew. In Jesus’ day, tax collectors were seen as outsiders and traitors. Today’s tax collectors have rules that you follow; you hire an accountant or use an online platform, you fill out all your forms, and pay your taxes. At times you may not appreciate the taxes that are due! Some think their taxes are too high, but most people would say

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 One of the things I love about God is how He is always on the side of the little guy. He likes to make the weak strong so they can do good. Along those lines, today, I want to talk about Alexander the Great, one of my favorite historical figures. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” -Matthew 9:9-13
