Passion for the Word of God

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” – Deuteronomy 6:5 As I continue to share from my recent journey to Israel, I am reminded that the Jews were all about having passion and fire for the Lord. The central location for their worship was the synagogue, and in yesterday’s post, I described this beautiful place where people worshiped during Jesus’ time. Let me ask you to imagine what synagogue worship was like back then. My educated guess is that this house of God was located in the center of town, and people would walk there. Men and women gathered and worshiped together, singing spiritual songs and psalms, as well as praying together.  What we do know is that every synagogue was centered around the reading of the Torah and the Haftarah, which is a series of selections from

Pressing the Idea of Faith

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” – Hebrews 11:6 My family and I recently traveled to Israel. In this next series, I’m thrilled to share with you insights into Jesus’ life and how He calls us to faith. In Capernaum, it was a gorgeous morning and we were in a beautiful synagogue where people worshiped in Jesus’ time. Next to the main worship area would have been a beit midrash where many young students would have studied the Torah, learned and memorized, read and debated.  The interesting thing about Jesus is that He was a rabbi at heart. And as a rabbi, he was fulfilling the Torah and the law of Moses. But He was also accomplishing something else. His messages were more about faith than they

Honesty is Everything

“Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.” – Proverbs 12:19 The most important trait that distinguishes a true leader is integrity. In fact, I don’t think there is a more treasured or valued quality in today’s world than being transparently authentic. Nothing cultivates serenity of heart and mind like being honest, both with ourselves and with others. There is a reward for truthfulness that far outweighs the temporary discomfort of having to speak openly in tough or awkward situations.  Have you ever worked for someone who was not straightforward? I know I have, and it was one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life. Nobody wants to follow a person who’s secretive and can’t be trusted. In fact, it can be almost maddening when you’re not certain that the one who’s leading you is being forthright about how you’re doing or where you’re going.

Your Victory Isn’t Just for You

“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 15:57 It is a blessing to be able to bless others! Here’s something I’d like for you to know and never forget: Your victory is not just for you — it’s for everyone else, too! I am reminded of how God filled Sarah’s life with joy and laughter as the promise of God through her son Issac was fulfilled! In Genesis 21:6 it states: “Sarah said, ‘God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.’ ” As a matter of fact, I’m not sure if she knew just how many generations would hear of her faith walk and rejoice with her as a result of it.  When God gives you victory, success, and accomplishments and you receive a host of accolades, understand that your victory isn’t

God Chose You

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” – John 15:16 As a result of our love and enthusiasm for God, we have all made promises to Him in our hearts. You looked in the mirror one day and told yourself and God who you would become, where you would go, and what you would achieve. The good news is that you are still alive and there is still time to fulfill each of those promises. It’s good to reaffirm those affirmations you told yourself as you looked in the mirror! Over twenty years ago, I made a vow to God because I started noticing many young pastors were getting into drugs and losing their faith, or just getting weird, and I cried

Align Your Dream With Service

“But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.” – Luke 22:26 I’d like you to consider this principle today: If you have a dream in your heart, and others need you to achieve your dream, then you have a winning idea on your hands. I believe that if you are able to visualize your God-given dream, business, product, or ministry, and other people are going to need it — or it’s filling a need that isn’t being met — what you have is a winner. This will make a big difference in the world. The truth of the matter is the more you align your dream with the service of others, the more likely that dream is going to come true.  If you said to Jesus that you wanted to

Open Up Your Life to Miracles

“Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelek, his wife and his female slaves so they could have children again,” – Genesis 20:17 Among the best ways to learn how to open up your life to miracles is to 1) Help someone or pray for someone who has what you want, or 2) Help someone or pray for someone who wants what you want. You will find that when you do this, you open up your world in a meaningful way. Something spiritual will happen and you’ll see God’s handiwork unfold before your eyes.  In fact, it happened to Abraham and Sarah, who waited 25 years for the promise of their son, Isaac. During this time of waiting, they traveled through Gerar and encountered King Abimelek. The king was unable to have children, so Abraham prayed for him, his wife and their female servants. Through this prayer, it then

You Are the Captain of Your Ship

“And Hiram sent him ships commanded by his own men, sailors who knew the sea. These, with Solomon’s men, sailed to Ophir and brought back four hundred and fifty talents of gold, which they delivered to King Solomon.” – 2 Chronicles 8:18 Today, I encourage you to become the captain of your own “ship” or life. Earl Nightingale, a radio speaker and author who specialized in human character development, put it this way: “Think of a ship with the complete voyage mapped out and planned. The captain and crew know exactly where the ship is going and how long it will take — it has a definite goal. And 9,999 times out of 10,000, it will get there.” In fog, the destination may be invisible, but the captain still knows how to navigate it.  The good news is that only you can captain your life; no one else can do

Where’s Your Tent?

“Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the ‘tent of meeting.’ Anyone inquiring of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp.” – Exodus 33:7 Where do you go to meet with the Lord? Moses and the Israelites had the Tent of Meeting — a special place where they would go specifically to encounter God. On the contrary, David seemed to have a knack for enjoying the presence of Jesus wherever he was. He called out His Name at night on his bed and met with Him formally in the courts of the tabernacle. No matter where, the man after God’s own heart knew how to find His Savior.  Then there was Jesus Himself. The Lord often slipped away to find solace in the presence of His Father. Interestingly, It seems that Christ preferred to

Living on Autopilot

“But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away.” – 2 Corinthians 3:14 Are you on autopilot? Living on autopilot means no longer thinking about your actions or daily habits, but rather performing them mechanically or without self-awareness. It’s a fact of life that we’ve all dwelled in this space at one time or another. There are times when our whole lives are on autopilot, which can sometimes have an air of negativity and is void of God. If you make a habit of doing the bare minimum, your life will take you in a direction you don’t want.  Beware of unbecoming actions that start becoming the norm for you. Ultimately, it won’t yield a happy or peaceful life. If you start lying just a little
