A God of Glory and Goodness

“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple.” – Isaiah 6:1 When King Uzziah died, an era of prosperity and growth for Judah was coming to an end, and Isaiah, a young prophet who had looked up to the king, continued to worship the Lord. On a day not unlike any other, he was in the temple; it was quiet, dark, and reverent until a great trembling was felt throughout the building. Just then, a scary presence came over the room and it began to fill with smoke. Before long, the sound of the word kadosh, which means holy in Hebrew, was heard again and again in unison. Suddenly, in the darkness, a piercing light beamed through the smoke and the train of a great robe was visible, descending from a

A Pain That Sets You Free

“ ‘Woe to me!’ I cried. ‘I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.’ Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, ‘See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.’ ” – Isaiah 6:5-7 It’s safe to say that Isaiah “freaked out” when he saw God’s glory and his reaction was to exclaim, “Woe to me! I am ruined! I am a man of unclean lips and I live among a people of unclean lips!” Beholding the fullness of the Almighty made the prophet immediately mindful of his own sinfulness, yet God showed mercy. After his

Be At Peace with God

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.” – Romans 5:1-2 One of the most amazing aspects of God’s power and God’s goodness is that He is able to break the bondage of all that is happening in our lives, and its effect on us. We can be at peace with God! When we respond in faith to God’s forgiveness, He is able to renew us and transform our hearts. We can put our trust in Him, even though it may take time.  Human beings share one thing in common, and it’s our ability to do evil, or to do wrong in God’s eyes and in our own eyes. We can violate what

Control Your Words

“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.” – James 3:9-10 We conclude our series on the importance of the words we hear and speak. In numerous passages in the Bible, James encourages us to control our words. He says that someone who can control their words is someone who can control their whole life. Like the way the bit in a horse’s mouth controls where the horse goes, or the rudder on a ship that controls its direction, so does the tongue guide a person’s life. I have some great advice for you if you want to ruin your life: Gossip like crazy, curse, insult, criticize, see the worst in others, make sure they know, or say

The Number One Way to Get Better

“If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” – 1 Peter 4:11 The number one way to get better in life is to improve your words. Do you want more from life? Become more! It begins with you becoming choosy and enthusiastic about the words you consume, whether it’s the words you read or the lyrics in the music you listen to. It is also important to become connected to and excited about what you say to people, and what you say to yourself when you look in the mirror. You can improve the quality of your life by improving the words that you say,

It’s Time to Align Your Words

“For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” – Matthew 12:37 Let’s become crazy enthusiastic and over the top about praying more, worshiping more, and speaking to our neighbors more! Now is the time to use better words. There’s probably not one person in this world who wouldn’t feel affected if a total stranger insulted them. We shouldn’t care, but we do. It’s human nature. It would be difficult to be completely stoic in that situation. To compose yourself and not speak negatively is a difficult task that requires you to train yourself. Why train yourself? Because words have a powerful effect. And yet, consider how loosey-goosey or lazy we are with what we say, what we hear, what we listen to, what we watch, what we say to our neighbors and friends, and what we say to ourselves. Now is the

Just Say the Word

“The centurion replied, ‘Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.’ ” – Matthew 8:8 Are you of the opinion that the prayers you pray, the songs you sing, and the confessions and declarations you make have no effect? Does it feel like they do not seem to make a difference to God? Do you think they don’t accomplish anything? Today be encouraged because they’re accomplishing everything!  In the Roman army, there was a centurion captain who had great faith in Jesus’ words. His compassion for his sick servant prompts him to share the servant’s predicament with Jesus. He asked, “Shall I come and heal him?” The centurion tells Jesus that he’s not worthy to have Him in his house, but he needs Him to heal his servant. The centurion then said, “But just say

The Picture Your Heart Paints

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips.” – Proverbs 4:23,24 The words you speak in life are coming from your own heart and painting a picture of your life. I’ll illustrate this with a great story! While walking down the road, a man sees two artists painting a scene of the Los Angeles landscape. He sees a woman painting a beautiful picture, set on a hill, the Hollywood sign, gorgeous art deco buildings, new cars, people dressed up, and a sunny day in Southern California. As the next guy paints the same landscape, you see chain-link fences, people doing drugs, a lot of gray, spray paint, trash, and litter. The interesting thing is that both painters are seeing the same thing, but they’re expressing and experiencing it differently. Life is very

Words That Lift People Up

“From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things, and the work of their hands brings them reward.” – Proverbs 12:14 Today we continue to recognize the power of our words. We have so much opportunity to bless those around us. Isn’t it time that you put your trust in the Lord with the words you speak? What if you began using words that are full of faith, that are based on scriptures, that are trustworthy, beautiful, praiseworthy, and confident? Those are the words that make a difference, that lift people up. You won’t lift yourself up by tearing others down.  This is why dictators, for example, who are very familiar with the power of guns, bombs and planes, know that the thing that most threatens them is speech. This is why the Constitution of the United States has 27 amendments, and the first one is freedom

Be People of Words

“For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” – Matthew 12:37 A powerful principle in the Bible taught through Moses is that we are to be people of words. As Moses leads the Israelites through the wilderness, they are thirsty. As a result, Moses asks the Lord, “What am I to do…?” God then directs him to a rock and tells him to strike it, and water will flow. Moses strikes the rock, water flows out, and everyone drinks. Later, it happens again, but there is tension within the community this time. People are grumbling, angry, and stubborn. Angry with them, Moses finally stands before the Lord, and tells Him people are thirsty. The Lord says, “Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water.”  So Moses and his brother, Aaron, go to the rock and Moses
