Reflection

Born to Triumph

“Then one of the elders said to me, ‘Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.’” – Revelation 5:5 Merry Christmas! Though it’s been an unprecedented and bumpy road that’s brought us to this December 25, today can be a milestone we’ll never forget, because when we walk through seasons of turmoil and loss, God brings our hearts closer to that which is eternal. While our focus in times gone by has been on entertaining, presents, and holiday “perfection,” this year has made it clear what’s most important. In 2020, none of us will take for granted good health, food on our table, a job that pays the bills, or the loved ones who surround us (even virtually). More importantly, we won’t forget the Guest of Honor at our Christmas

About the Music: “Let There Be Peace on Earth”

We are so blessed by our Voices of Hope Children’s Choir! Here they are performing their rendition of “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” accompanied by the Hour of Power Choir and Orchestra. This beautiful anthem was developed in 1955, with the words written by Jill Jackson and the melody by her husband, Sy Miller. Jill, after having experienced a sharp dip in her depression which led to her attempted — and failed — suicide, her heart then opened wide and willing to God’s unconditional love. She discovered from that moment on that she has a purpose, and her life and talent for music were valuable. A decade later, Sy and Jill went to a California retreat in the mountains where they met an array of young people with various socioeconomic, religious, and ethnic backgrounds. This week-long retreat was dedicated to exploring friendship through education and conversation. Introducing their song

MULTIDIMENSIONAL…

Either side of you…

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” -1 John 4:16  Within every single human being is this passion, this Eros, this fire, this desire. And, when the Holy Spirit comes into your life, it comes alongside your spirit or your will, and guides that fire within you so that it becomes life giving. In other words, because of the Holy Spirit, Jesus becomes present through the whole Church. That means that, in a weird way, Jesus is sitting right next to you in that pew right now. Did you know that? Right now. Not in the same way that he was back then, but because the Holy Spirit dwells in believers on either side of you, Jesus is made present in you and next to you. Though most people don’t have the

Actions of love…

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud…And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” -1 Corinthians 13:4,13 Often, we think that we must first feel this emotion of love before we act on that love. Yes, those feelings of love make the actions of love easier. However, in every case, you will have a greater feeling of affection, what we may call love, after the action of love. I was talking to a friend about this, and he said, “That reminds me of this day when I was on my way to see my mom, and a guy shoved flowers in my face, and said, ‘Flowers, five dollars.’” Wanting primarily to appease the guy, but then thinking about his mom, whom he loved even though he wasn’t really feeling it right

Caring for human good…

“If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing…And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” -1 Corinthians 13:3,13 Remember this in 2016: Emotions make great slaves but terrible masters. Are the emotions of your life – especially the emotion of love – mastering you? Do they govern your life? Or, do you transcend your emotions and make decisions that cause your emotions to follow you? The first step to controlling the emotion of love is to know that love is, primarily, an action. When you put your hand on someone’s shoulder and say, “Can I pray for you?” Or, when you say to someone, “Hey, can I give you a glass of water or something to eat?” When you help out the

Love in action in 2016…

“If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing…And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” -1 Corinthians 13:2,13 It’s love that’s going to carry us through 2016. And, it’s love in action that will help bring others closer to God during this New Year. Paul, the apostle of love, shared with us the best description of the love we ought to have for one another. He emphasized that love is paramount, the most important thing, the thing that transcends every moral code, higher than any claim that anyone makes. And, without love, nothing matters. People may say about love, “I get this feeling in my heart and I nurture it. Then, if it blossoms enough, I will
