Here to Serve Others

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” – Galatians 5:13 Today I will conclude our study of three cultural keys. The first key is the importance of connecting with others. The second key we discussed yesterday highlighted that we are antifragile. Last but not least, Jesus told us we’re not here to be served, we’re here to serve others. Servant leadership is all about other people. Jesus lived life powerfully by serving others. There is a Bible account illustrating this and is repeated in both the book of Matthew and Mark. In this account, two disciples of Jesus were ambitiously positioning themselves in the anticipated kingdom where Jesus would rule. Jesus then called all the disciples together to teach them the concept of servant leadership. Jesus shared from Mark Chapter

What is Your Calling?

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:45 Today I want to answer the question that so many people ask: What is my calling? In this series, we will unfold many aspects concerning this important topic. It’s a question you may continually ask, especially when you feel like you’re in a rut, in a middle or gray area, or maybe you just lost your job. Or, perhaps you’ve been at your job for a long time and you used to love it, but now you no longer enjoy it. It still pays well, but you’re unsatisfied and maybe you’re ready to do something else. You pray, “God, I’m thankful for this assignment, but was I born to do this? What is my true calling?” The heart of this question signifies

You Are Made to Work!

“God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’” – Genesis 1:28 We talked a few days ago about how the norm in our society seems to be to worship the idea of doing nothing. We are always rushing to get through the next project or the next day of work, or the next class so we can reach a place of simply being idle. However, the truth is that we were made to do things and when we do, we find our greatest satisfaction!  Did you know that part of the blessing of the Garden of Eden was the work that God gave Adam and Eve to do?  As opposed to being drudgery, they were designed

Giving Sight to an Invisible God

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” – John 16:13-15 One of the most important lessons I’ve learned through years of studying the Bible and doing ministry work is that we gain greater authority when we understand our call. The Lord’s gift to us in Jesus is one of impartation; in other words, He has given us His Spirit to make us holy and powerful like He is. Though it can

Let Go of Ego

“Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.’” – Luke 12:15 Which of us hasn’t driven through a really exclusive neighborhood and thought to ourselves, “Man, I would love to live here.” Or maybe we’ve taken a walk by the beach and admired a massive yacht floating by that left us wondering how the “other half” does it. No matter who we are, the finer things beckon us, and though there’s nothing wrong with having what the world offers, pursuing it above all else leaves us feeling hollow. While most of us instinctively know this to be true, society continually hounds us with images of how it might be if we would just bow to its idols. The problem is that in the end, doing this will leave us sad. It’s been proven

Walk Into the Middle of the Mess

“And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” – Matthew 16:18 Yesterday, we talked about Peter and how he began his life as Simon — the “good guy” who was religious and very responsible. Though he was passionate about serving his Savior, he struggled to understand that Jesus came to bring hope and help to the middle of sin and darkness. However, this changed when the Lord led him — along with the other disciples — to the Gates of Hades. I know this sounds a bit strange, so let me explain. In an effort to illustrate the depths of His mercy and power, Christ took the twelve apostles to the region of Cesarea Phillipi, which was kind of like the Vatican of Pan worship. Pan was the Roman god of fertility

Serve

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” – Galatians 5:13 The word ‘serve’ appears a lot in the Bible. But I don’t know how well it actually translates how we’re supposed to act when we serve. And as Christians, service should always be coming from a place of care, compassion, love and especially hospitality. Remember this word: hospitality. And hospitality is under your care and they’re your guest. Because of that, you are going out of your way to make sure that the wounded, hurting, and least of these folks in your sphere of influence feel loved, respected, and even protected by you. Prayer Teach me, God, how to serve. I want to love others and to be your servant. Reflection How can you serve others?
