Attack Precedes Victory

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” – Exodus 14:14 We talked yesterday about the fact that we have an enemy and that he is serious about taking down believers before his final demise. Today, I want to share another thought about that — the devil may have his eye on you because God has set you apart to do great things.  Most of you know of my grandfather Dr. Robert H. Schuller. He was a great man of God and although he didn’t often preach about Satan, behind the scenes, he talked about spiritual warfare, the Holy Spirit, and angels all the time. There was one particular encounter with him on this subject that I vividly recall. It was when I was in college and I was totally on fire for God. He was getting older and he sometimes needed help, so I was

Fight or Light?

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” – 2 Corinthians 10:3,4 Yesterday, we talked about the fact that our lives on earth are a fight and that there’s a battle raging for our minds and hearts. It’s important to recognize this truth, because if we don’t, we may end up serving something or someone besides the Lord. Knowing this, the next logical question is what can we do about it? While there are two ways to engage in spiritual warfare, one leads to frustration while the other results in freedom. The natural inclination when we’re attacked in any manner is to fight in our flesh. This usually happens when we fail to realize that we’re not warring against people

Don’t Retreat

“He said: ‘Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.’” – 2 Chronicles 20:15 In studying ancient warfare, it’s interesting to note that rather than two armies going against each other full force and clambering, they would often get within ten feet of one another and just jab and throw things. In fact, sometimes this strange practice of poking and tormenting went on for hours. Interestingly, if you watch closely, you can see the same thing happen in protests today. Typically, police officers and demonstrators stand on either side of an invisible line, and as long as they remain planted and engage from a distance, nothing drastically changes. However, whether in old-school battles or modern-day marches, people get hurt when

The War is In Your Mind

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 10:5 Earlier this year, my dad contacted me and wondered if I had a copy of C.S. Lewis’ book The Screwtape Letters. He happened to be working on a sermon in which he wanted to quote it, so it pained me to tell him that I don’t have it in my possession anymore. Though I once had a really cool first-edition print that I got from my grandpa’s cabin, I think a friend of mine “borrowed” it in college and never gave it back. Though that’s irrelevant, I bring it up to let you you that reading this book early in my life helped to greatly increase my understanding of spiritual warfare. Though it’s not one of C.S. Lewis’ more

Spiritual Warfare

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” -1 Peter 5:8-9
