The Light of the World

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” – Matthew 5:14 Who is the light of the world? I’m certain that if I asked that question to a group of Sunday schoolers, they would shout out “Jesus,” and they would be right… but not entirely. As strange as it seems, the real answer to this inquiry is that you and I are. Since our Savior left earth and ascended into Heaven, He placed within our hands the awesome responsibility of bringing His radiance to the world. In fact, Jesus says that we are like a city on a hill that cannot be hidden, and when we build our lives on Him, His light shines from our spirits and breaks through the darkness around us. “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” – John 8:12 It’s always interesting to observe the changing of the seasons. Of course, being from Southern California, we don’t experience it as dramatically as some places; however, our days get shorter and the nights get colder. Since I lived in Oklahoma for a few years of my life, you might think I’d be used to it, but I like sunshine and the beach, so when it gets dark early and I have to stay inside, it’s an adjustment for me.
