Jesus Shows Us What God is Like

“If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.“ – John 14:7 If you’re a Christian, I know you believe Jesus is God. Do you want to know what God looks like? We can look to Jesus, who will show us who God is! As we continue in our Advent theme of adoration, we can focus on and deeply appreciate Jesus’ reflection of the Father. Jesus never makes any person sick to punish them. Notice how Jesus invited sinners, many of whom were considered horrible outcasts, to the table to eat with Him. Jesus didn’t get upset at their wrongdoings. The people He did get upset with were not the people you’d think — they were religious leaders.  In contrast, the gods of this world consume the life of their worshipers, and their worshipers like being

God Responds to Faith

“You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.” – James 2:22 God cares a lot about faith and wants you to trust Him. Today, we will see the widow’s faith in Zarephath as found in 1 Kings, Chapter 17. Zarephath was a Phoenician city on the Mediterranean coast. Because of a terrible drought, people were not only thirsty; they were starving for food. The Lord instructed the prophet, Elijah, saying: Go to Zarephath and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.  Isn’t it interesting that God would direct Elijah to one without resources or hope as a supply source? So Elijah went to Zarephath and saw the widow there gathering sticks. He asked her, “Bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink.” He also had

Step Into the Water

“And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.” – Joshua 3:13 I remember a movie from the 90s with a brilliant concept that I will share! When we’re children, our spiritual cup is very small, and it doesn’t take much to fill it and to help us feel closer to God. As Christians, when we get older and grow in our faith, that cup gets bigger. We need more of God in our life, more times of prayer, and greater actions of faith. We need more of Him, His word, and His life. And if we neglect that, we feel empty in a way that we wouldn’t when we were children. A great example of this in the Bible is when the

Hope is Not Enough

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” – Hebrews 11:1 Today is a day of hope, and we need it like never before! Hope is something that sustains us when we’re going through hard times, and it’s the thing that keeps us positive. If we lose hope, we begin to lose our dreams and our confidence. But can I tell you something? Hope is not enough if you’ve been a Christian for a long time; God wants more from you than that. He wants faith. He wants you to have hope, but He wants it realized in knowledge and action, which is precisely what faith is. I have a message entitled, “Hope is for Noobs.” Do you know what a noob is? It’s a noobie, novice, or rookie. Hope is for people who are new to faith or have an

When You Conquer Fear

“…in God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me?” – Psalm 56:11 We have a great destiny in God, but fear is one element that will try to come between you and your destiny. When I was ten years old, the kids in my neighborhood were all into BMX bikes. We called them dirt bikes, and we would ride them to school. There was a shortcut home, but it had a hill that was extremely steep and challenging, especially for a 10-year-old. After many rides home, one of the three boys in our group finally rode down the hill. Then the second one did, but I didn’t do it. I felt like such a coward. I would take the long way, but I felt horrible, especially when my friends had already been successful. So the big day came; I decided to take the hill! Yes,

Brave People

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6 Today I want to talk about an unusual revelation I had last week as I was working through the scriptures. For brave people, fear is actually a gift. You’ll hear many sermons about how fear corrupts, and it does, or how fear can paralyze us and yes, it can. But if you’re brave, and I think you are, there’s also a gift in it. When you’re courageous and receive a dream in your heart from God, that dream may cause you to feel overwhelmed and unsure of yourself. But take note that God’s plan for you may seem massive, but it’s good.  At times, insecurity may keep even a brave person up at night. You may be afraid

His Plan for the World

“He made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.” – Ephesians 1:9,10 Did you know God’s plan for the world is: “On earth as it is in Heaven,” and that He chose you to be a part of it? If you grew up Christian, you’ve probably prayed that well-known prayer a million times. Matthew 6:10 states: “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” When you think of Heaven, do you think of sick, angry, or mean people not belonging? Of course not. Eternal life is not just living forever; it’s the quality of God’s life here and now. It’s the life where God is moving for you, even if

You Are Chosen

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: Love each other.” – John 15:16,17 Today I want to share a very hopeful message: “Be assured that God has chosen you.” Your calling is not only for salvation, but for a great purpose in this special time on earth. For us humans, there’s an inherent need and deep desire in us to be chosen. One of my most significant beliefs is that if we live in the blessing of being chosen and trust in God’s will, life will be so much better.  At times we may rightfully feel left out. Remember those games on the playground where the team captains had to choose people for their team? Their assignment

Renewal and Restoration Bring Joy

“Nehemiah said, ‘Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.’ ” – Nehemiah 8:10 Today I want to share the story of joy experienced in a season of restoration. The Book of Nehemiah, Chapter 8, tells the story of the Jewish people chosen by God to be a force of renewal, restoration, covenant life, joy, and love in a world swallowed up by evil. Unfortunately, during this time, society was experiencing child sacrifice, human violations, and slavery. God’s people were meant to bring freedom and exemplify God’s character. But because the influence of the world seduced them, they were punished by God and exiled to Babylon.  After being exiled for 50-plus years, they returned to the Promised Land. Once the temple was

Faith Builds Dreams

“By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care.” – 1 Corinthians 3:10 We’ve all had dreams for our future, whether it’s regarding our businesses, careers, ministry, and of course our families. But the question is, how can you build these God-given dreams and aspirations? Faith opens our whole life, much like a hand opens to embrace a friend. Similarly, faith opens our hearts to the Kingdom of God to pursue our dreams, and to love and serve our neighbors. How can you have an idea that’s bigger than you if you don’t have faith?  Our dreams give us a reason to wake up in the morning and also something to live for. I know there is something you can picture in your mind that if you were able to
