The Last Page of Your Story

“The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.” – Revelation 3:5 My good friend Rich Mouw, a former president of Fuller Seminary, shared in a sermon his unusual way of reading a novel. When he begins to get worried about the protagonist or the situation, he goes to the book’s last page and reads it. His reasoning is he wants to know in advance the good outcome. He would say, “Oh good, they got together, or whew, he lived.” When he learns what the ending is, he goes back to whatever chapter he’s on, and reads his book in a more relaxed posture. What he shared in his sermon is this: I have a book about your life. I’ve read

A Season of Eating Manna

“The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a land that was settled; they ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan.” – Exodus 16:35 Many of you today are in a season of eating manna. Allow me to explain: In the Bible, God’s servant Moses leads the children of Israel out of Egyptian slavery, through the wilderness, and to the Promised Land. In this transition, God provides this bread from heaven called manna. It keeps the people alive but isn’t a great meal.  Maybe you’re in this place today, an in-between wilderness where you’re not in slavery anymore, but you’re not in the Promised Land either. You find yourself in-between point A and point B, and you’re wondering, God, I have this dream, this desire that I feel you’ve put in my heart, but I’ve been waiting so long. When will I get there? That in-between

Wisdom for a Worry-free Life

“And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.” – Luke 12:29-31 Jesus has a practical solution for worry. He instructs us to seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness, and all will be delivered to us. I recently heard this great line by a pastor: “Why pray when you can worry.” We see the humor in this, don’t we? Many of us are hoping to get a break from our worries. However, we must acknowledge the unfortunate reality of the many concerns in the world today. Once we accept this, we can begin to change our viewpoint. We can set our sights in one direction: the Lord.  Jesus uses

Nothing is Impossible for You

“The Lord said, ‘If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.’ ” – Genesis 11:6 People have been obsessed with the story of the Tower of Babel, and I think it’s because there are many interesting aspects to this Bible lesson. I think one of the most fascinating things from this ancient account is when God proclaims, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.” Did you know that Jesus repeated this phrase? In Mark chapter nine, Jesus states, “Everything is possible for one who believes.”  After the great flood, Noah’s children and generations thereafter became evil, but because they had one language, they created a unified, yet flawed plan to reach God. They decide to

A Second Conversion

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:38 “Our hearts are restless until they rest in Him.” This famous quote is from St. Augustine of Hippo, who is one of the most famous and influential theologians in Christianity, other than the Apostle Paul. Hailing from Africa, St. Augustine was also a philosopher whose writings influenced the development of Western philosophy and Western Christianity. St. Augustine and Blaise Pascal, a French mathematician who we focused on yesterday, are separated by 2000 years but both probed and answered the age-old questions regarding the need to connect with God and worship Him.  Both of these theologians came to the Lord through reasoning and mental exercises. Pascal’s reasoning is famously known as Pascal’s Wager, which argues that it is in one’s rational self-interest to act as if God exists. I actually think it’s

An Uncomfortable Sacrifice for the Better Good

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28 God is calling you to make an uncomfortable sacrifice for the better good. There are invaluable and specific moments in life when we’re called to do something that’s responsible, honorable, life-giving, and meaningful. However, sometimes this can become a really hard choice to make. We know in our hearts we’re supposed to move into these life-giving moments and actions, and we must trust God with our sacrifice. Our sacrifice should never be half-baked, it should never be a half-step, but it should be our very best, and it should be accomplished with our whole heart.  An obedient response to God’s call on our life honors God and brings dignity to our being, but also is practical. This undertaking actually is to your

God Has Good Things in Store For You

“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” – Psalm 27:13 Sometimes it’s easy to question if God has good things in store for us. We look at what is going on in the world today and can’t help but wonder what He’s up to. Maybe you have experienced harsh conditions or hard trials that make you question God. These circumstances could involve your family, school, or the workplace. I remember “hating” some of my coaches growing up and it was a difficult time for me. I do recall one awesome coach, but he would still make us do really hard drills! But, coaches are meant to stretch and strengthen you physically and mentally. Similar to a coach, God has the best in store for you, but sometimes it takes awhile to realize it. God is in your corner!

Three Keys to Becoming a Servant Leader

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5,6 As we wrap up our discussion about what it means to love our enemies and bring unity to our workplaces, I want to offer three practical tips that will help you to be a conduit of peace from the inside out. You see, becoming a servant leader is not a matter of trying harder, it’s a matter of the heart. The more you trust the Lord with your life and the more assuredly you believe that serving others is His best plan for you, the more naturally peace and goodness will flow from you. That said, here are a few things to remember: First of all, be patient. Intentionally practice patience and quit hurrying through your life. Instead

Testing and Tithing

“Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” – Malachi 3:8-10 Yesterday, we talked about how money is the king of the earth and how, even when we are in the Kingdom of God, it plays an important role in our lives. This is why the Lord gives us a set of truths in His Word that equip us to handle wealth His way because He is the giver of all of it. Today,

Don’t Predict the Outcome

“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!” – Romans 11:33 Something that a lot of us like to do is predict the future. Especially if we’re intelligent and good at assimilating information, we think we know what will happen based on our knowledge and past experience. And as much doing this provides a sense of security and the illusion of being in control, it leads only to lost energy. You see, we all think we’re smarter than we are, so writing the story of our future gives us a feeling of power, but it also robs us of the focus we need to make it through today. There’s a reason Jesus said not to worry about tomorrow, because when we learn to take Him at His Word, our lives get much better. Right now,
