Teach Your Children Well

“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

– Ephesians 6:4

There is a tradition of Orthodox Jewish children memorizing the first five books of the Bible, also known as the Torah. Today, I want to point out how that practice is proof of just how much the Hebrew culture values and treasures their children. When we have children, we love them tremendously and want the very best for them. As Christians, this typically means that we desire for them to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to know His Word and His ways. Accordingly, one of the most powerful things we can ever do for our offspring — whether biological or spiritual — is to teach them to love the truth of Scripture and to adore the Rabbi Jesus. While it’s natural to want them to excel in other areas, guiding them in how to treasure the Bible should always be at the top of our priority list. There’s an old saying in the Mishna, which is the oral tradition of Torah, that says that greater honor is ascribed to a young man’s rabbi than to his father, for his father brought him into this world, but his rabbi who taught him wisdom, brings him into the world to come

Friend, spiritual parenting of your own children, grandchildren or other young people has eternal impact and it builds a legacy that will long outlast you. Devote yourself to loving, modeling, and teaching the Word of God, and you will influence generations on earth while also expanding the Kingdom of Heaven. Teach your children to revere the Scriptures and you will cultivate world-changers who leave this planet better than they found it!

Prayer

Jesus, show me how to teach my spiritual and/or biological children how to love you and your Word.
