The Anointing of Healing

“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.”

– James 5:14

Yesterday, we saw that the Holy Spirit’s anointing on our lives makes us a source of wisdom and light to others. Today, I want to talk about yet another type of authority we receive in our divine consecration, and that is healing. Just as the oil used in ancient anointing rituals had power to hasten recovery and restore health, so our lives as Christians are set apart to be a soothing salve on the world’s wounds. Interestingly, the medicinal benefits of olive oil are many, and they include decreasing bodily inflammation, improving heart health, aiding in digestion, easing pain, and cutting down on the time it takes to recover from burns and wounds. Perhaps this is why Jesus’ brother James instructed the elders of the church to anoint a sick person with oil — not only was it a symbol of God’s protection and covering, but it also had healing properties. Understanding this, it’s clear that our call as believers is to steward Christ’s restorative power so it can be passed on to others. Whether it’s laying hands on someone and lifting up a faith-filled prayer for wholeness or letting our compassion penetrate the depths of a wounded soul, we’re set apart to lead lives that point people to the One who renews body, mind, and spirit. As ambassadors of Jehovah Rapha — the God who heals — we’re conduits of a supernatural cure that dispenses divine hope wherever we go.

My friend, you are anointed to heal like Jesus! As you let His Word take root in your heart, your faith expands and the riches of His Spirit bubble up and spill over from within you. Everywhere you go, you are a salve that soothes pain, softens people’s souls, and eases the burn of betrayal. You are filled with the power of the Living God, and as you invite Him to be your consuming passion, He will give you so much love, joy, grace, and peace that you naturally carry His presence to everyone you encounter.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for giving me an anointing of healing. I ask you to fill me afresh with your Spirit so my life brings comfort, relief, and health to others.

Reflection

Take a moment to pray and ask the Lord who you can touch with His healing anointing today.

  3. People need to be allowed their own decision regarding vaccination. I’m one who had a frightening reaction to an anti-viral oral medication and I will not take the vaccine.

  4. Yes. There is a long Biblical tradition of Christians anointing with olive oil. Bobby, your devotion today is extremely timely for me to read this. The timeliness of your devotion on the use of olive oil for anointing is like a miracle to me. Just recently, I was appointed as the U.S. Representative for a leading Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil company in Greece. The owners of the company are very devout, beautiful Christians, and members of the Greek Orthodox Church. Because I am a Christian friend and a registered dietitian nutritionist, they wanted me to represent them here in the U.S. to bring their excellent quality organic olive oil to our country. The olive oil comes from olive trees from Corinth, Greece and is produced in Corinth, so there is much Biblical significance to where it comes from as traditionally the Church of Corinth is believed to have been founded by Paul and he spent time in there spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. And of course today, we are blessed to read Paul’s beautiful and powerful letters to the Corinthians in the Bible. The organic olive oil I will be bringing into the U.S. will be sold in markets as a healthy oil for culinary purposes, but will also be specially bottled for Christian ministers who would like to use it for anointing oil as part of their ministry. There are also Christian churches that may want to use it as an ingredient in making their communion bread recipes. We hope and pray that consumers will use this Greek organic, unfiltered and unrefined extra virgin olive oil for its healthful and healing properties in food preparation, skincare and other uses, but also spiritually as an anointing oil.
