“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,”
– Hebrews 12:1
Who is the great cloud of witnesses? This question makes many of us pause for a moment. In Hebrews Chapter 12, the author states, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses…” I used to think the great cloud of witnesses was like those picturesque medieval paintings, with the supernatural host of Heaven and angels flying around. It is that in part, but when you are with other believers, you are also among the great cloud of witnesses.
I was able to grasp the concept of the great cloud of witness as my friend and mentor, Pastor Juan Carlos Ortiz shared, by thanking me for the choir. Pastor Juan, who passed away last year, said, “I just love when the choir sings. When they sing, I imagine my son singing with an array of saints and angels, the glories of God in the great cloud of witnesses.” His beloved son passed away at 28 years old. He pictured in his mind, and rightly so, a whole array of saints and angels, among them his son, who was there singing the glories of God.
Friend, this testimony gave me a fresh perspective on the great cloud of witnesses. Did you know that you have friends, family, and loved ones who have passed away and are watching your life, cheering you on, and rooting you on to victory? And when you get to that place, you’ll be able to give them a big hug and talk about some of the amazing stories and miracles that God did in your life.
Father, thank you for the array of saints and loved ones who are cheering me on.
Do you reflect on the amazing experiences God is allowing in your life? How do you share these experiences with others?
