Today, I want to focus on academics and intelligent people, and how, so often as thinkers, it is easy to reason ourselves out of what we need most. Frequently, our overthinking, spinning our wheels, dwelling on details, and relentless pursuit of knowledge can draw us away from the inner spiritual life that is available to everyone through Christ.

I love academics, and in many ways, I consider myself an academic. I have published and studied extensively, delivered speeches in educational settings, and collaborated with institutions like Harvard, Stanford, and other major universities on various projects. My passion for knowledge and science is deep—I always want to learn more. Yet, there is a significant danger for academics. Most begin with a youthful thirst for knowledge, eager to explore, build, and understand. They want to have answers ready when curiosity arises, such as knowing the distance from the Earth to the moon. While the pursuit and thirst for knowledge are noble and fulfilling endeavors, they should never overshadow the deeper spiritual life available to us all.

My friend, a common trap for those who seek knowledge is the desire for constant validation. It’s easy to become preoccupied with receiving recognition for published work or being the originator of new ideas, rather than focusing on the true purpose of learning. True wisdom lies not only in understanding the world around us, but also in nurturing our relationship with Christ. By balancing our intellectual pursuits with spiritual growth, we can experience a more meaningful and complete life.
