I think the world is terrified of death. Society is terrified of death. There is actually really strong evidence in psychology that many people who are afraid of death are actually afraid of the void or nothingness of death. So they work tirelessly to build a hero complex for themselves — a legacy so that when they die, their death has meaning. But as Christians, we’re not afraid of death. Death is a doorway to a whole other amazing life. For us, death is not falling asleep, it’s waking up! We don’t live to fulfill our legacy, we live to grow the legacy of Jesus Christ. We live for others. We don’t have to prove ourselves to anyone. Instead, we can learn the easy rhythms of grace, and that’s what you do. You are learning to listen, to discern, to trust, and to hear the voice of God. You’re opening your body and your heart to the Holy Spirit, and that is that a good thing. That’s such a better place to be. |
