The Lord Will Always Catch You

“Because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

– Philippians 1:5,6

Yesterday I shared the first two of three definitions of Christian love. The first is that Christian love can be defined as a verb, it is something that you do for the benefit of others. The second is that Christian love is becoming a person who is loving. I likened it to bringing a positive, contagious, and loving vibe with you everywhere you go! Lastly, Christian love is something that God does in us first and foremost. This is something you should never forget.

Father Henri Nouwen, a Dutch-born Catholic priest, professor, and prolific writer, shared a fantastic story about the catcher and the flyer. While on tour with trapeze artists The Flying Rodleighs, he observed their performances. Flying and catching, the Rodleighs move through the air like dancers. Rodleigh shared, “As a flyer, I must have complete trust in my catcher.” A flyer does nothing, but a catcher does everything with split-second precision. Catching the catcher is the worst thing the flyer can do. If I grabbed the catcher’s wrists, I might break them, or he might break mine, and that would be the end.

Friend, what Father Nouwen observed describes what the Lord does for us. This is what salvation means. Our task is to fly and do what we’re called to do and then trust that the Lord will catch us at the end. Rather than trying to catch God, we trust that He — the catcher — will catch us. That’s beautiful, isn’t it? He always does, and He will always catch you.

Father, thank you for loving me first and as I carry out my calling, and thank you for always being there to catch me.
