I’m reminded of the character-building power of perseverance. The Bible says that hope grows as a result of enduring suffering and trials, and I believe this is because when we undergo pain with a purpose, we cultivate inner strength that enhances our ability to withstand even greater adversity. 

When I was 15, I went on a missionary trip to Thailand, which was a big change from my Southern California beach summers. It was very hot, and we encountered unfamiliar illnesses. Each morning, we had an hour of prayer before breakfast, which consisted of chicken, rice, and eggs. Due to the pollution in Bangkok, we wore special masks, which would be brown and gray by the end of the day. Despite the challenges, the trip was spiritually exhilarating. I witnessed remarkable miracles, including a tumor being healed, a man walking for the first time, and rain being sent to a drought-stricken area after our prayers.

My friend, suffering for the sake of itself is of no value to you, but suffering with a purpose is what fortifies your faith, strengthens your heart, and draws you closer to your Savior. I encourage you to embrace any present pain in light of all that your soul stands to gain. Welcome the discomfort and stretching in your season and ask Jesus to use every obstacle to make you stronger and more assured in Him! You are a compassionate, fierce, and victorious child of the living God, and with His help, there is no storm you cannot weather and no barrier you cannot break through.
