“Some (seed) fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.”
– Matthew 13:5,6
Yesterday, we continued learning about the parable of the sower and we talked about the four types of heart soil we can have and how they impact our ability to receive the Word of God in our lives. Today, I want to focus specifically on rocky soil and look at what it means to have a “heart condition” of this type.
For a moment, imagine a handful of seed falling onto rocky soil; it hits the ground and springs up quickly, full of joy and life! In day-to-day living, I think we can liken this soil to passion. There are many events that stir our emotions and get us to “spring up” in fervor. We might be passionate about the Lord, or excited about an upcoming event, or maybe thrilled about a new job. However, passion, whatever its source, nearly always hits the rock of persecution. When the dream gets hard, or when people aren’t happy about what you’re doing, or when you encounter unexpected challenges, you may feel like giving up in defeat. Without fanfare and without the notice of the world, your vision and enthusiasm can wither away and take your very life with them.
Friend, emotion and passion alone are too shallow to anchor the weight and importance of your calling! While excitement may get your journey started, it will take persistence and hard work to finish what you have been set apart by God to do. This is why it’s imperative that you tend the soil of your heart. Understand that it takes time for the Word to become rooted in your life, and allow Jesus to mold you through all the inevitable ups and downs of the journey. He is faithful and He will never let go of your hand!
I pray, Jesus, for a depth of wisdom and understanding that moves me from passion to persistence in my calling.
Has your calling hit the rock of persecution? If so, how can you persevere in faith?
