“He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”
– Psalm 40:2
![]() How are you doing? When’s the last time someone asked you that question? If it wasn’t too long ago, how did you respond? I think many of us, when queried on our condition or status, give a canned or rote response rather than answering in a way that reflects the true state of our being. While this is fine in casual encounters, it’s beneficial for each of us to pause occasionally and take an account of the state of our hearts and souls. Here in Southern California, COVID-19 remains at the forefront of our lives, and we were recently faced with another shutdown. For many, the feeling of going backwards is especially difficult, and while I realize that everyone is being affected by the situation differently, the truth is that everyone is being affected. A microscopic enemy has waged war on our world and caused immense amounts of pain for millions. That said, caring for our inner person has never been as important as it is right now. Though it’s tempting to run away from unpleasant feelings — whether anger, fear, frustration, or despair — the best thing to do is to acknowledge them and bring them to the feet of Jesus. He knows and understands, and He offers grace to uniquely soothe our hearts in every situation. My friend, if you’re struggling, it’s okay. There’s no need to fake it or to talk yourself out of the emotions you are dealing with. Instead, search your soul, bring all that is in you — the good, the bad, and the ugly — to Jesus, and know that He knows exactly how you feel. He doesn’t condemn you for not being strong; in fact, as you walk through deep waters, He is walking with you. Lay your life before Him and let Him help you as only He can. He is aware of your challenges, He welcomes your heartfelt cries, and He alone can provide perfectly-fitted compassion and comfort. |
Prayer
Jesus, help me in the midst of my struggle. I need your grace and comfort as I walk through deep waters.
Reflection
How are you doing? Take some time to think about it and have a conversation with Jesus about your answer.
