Three Keys to Becoming a Servant Leader

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

– Proverbs 3:5,6

As we wrap up our discussion about what it means to love our enemies and bring unity to our workplaces, I want to offer three practical tips that will help you to be a conduit of peace from the inside out. You see, becoming a servant leader is not a matter of trying harder, it’s a matter of the heart. The more you trust the Lord with your life and the more assuredly you believe that serving others is His best plan for you, the more naturally peace and goodness will flow from within you. That said, here are a few things to remember:

First of all, be patient. Intentionally practice patience and quit hurrying through your life. Instead of thinking about the next place you need to go or to be, slow down so that you can notice the people around you and naturally see and meet their needs.

Second, be relaxed. In other words, chill out! Our world is so tightly wound and anxious that we can hardly see straight. Instead of exercising reason and logic, more and more, we see people responding emotionally and in anger to those around them. In contrast, one of the definitions of leadership is a relaxed presence. When others are drowning in their feelings, a leader is distinguished by being calm and rational. Be that person!

Finally, trust God. When things don’t go your way, trust that Jesus has a better plan. Even when something you poured your heart and soul into doesn’t pan out the way you thought it would, believe that He has something greater in store. Be above pettiness, jealousy, and resentment, and believe in the goodness of the One who knows the number of your days. He has you firmly in His grip, and because He wants only what’s best for you, your setbacks are only setups for something better! Isn’t that great news?

Jesus, I look to you for patience, peace, and faith. Help me to cultivate these things in my life and make me a servant leader from the inside out.

Which of the three things we talked about — patience, relaxation, or trust — is the hardest for you? Take a minute to pray and ask Jesus to help you in that area, and then listen for His response.
