Treasures in the Heavens

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

– Matthew 6:19,20

The Sermon on the Mount appears in Matthew chapters five to seven, and I have studied it extensively. This is Jesus’ second most important teaching, after The Lord’s Prayer. I want to focus on His teachings on storing up treasures in the Heavens, which is not just eternal Heaven, but the Heaven here on earth. The Bible says a lot about money and treasure. How you spend your money shows what you care about. The investments you make reveal what really matters to you. The best investment you can make is in Heaven!

Growing up in Sunday school, I thought this “treasure” was an eternal reward when I died. I envisioned it as a pile of treasure or a crown that we generally limit to life after death. We are not told by Jesus that we will reap what we sow, but that we will reap thirty, sixty, a hundredfold when we sow. It would be disappointing if you invested a dollar and reaped a dollar. Instead, He says that you receive thirty, sixty, or one hundred dollars in heavenly terms.

Friend, I have good news: This reward is for now and not just when we die. In Luke 18:29-30, Jesus said, “…no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.” When you invest in the Kingdom of the Heavens, be encouraged to receive a reward here on earth!

Thank you, Father, for the rewards you have for me on earth and in eternity.

In what ways are you investing in Kingdom endeavors? Are you seeing a return on your investment?
