“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. ‘You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.’ ”

– Matthew 5:13,14

Jesus tells us in one of His well-known sermons that we are salt and light. It’s who we are. Strangely, salt can lose its saltiness and light can lose its loftiness. It seems impossible that these elements could lose their strength, but they do. Some of you used to be nicer and there was a certain zest in your life. You carried a light, and you were full of love and kindness to everyone around you.

But now, maybe your light and salt have diminished. You think what you want is the will to live, but what you really need is the will to love. In the morning, you find it hard to get up and go. I saw a T-shirt the other day that read, “My favorite childhood memory was my back not hurting.” Sometimes life is just hard. You desire the will to get going; the will to carry on and get motivated, but we get better when we love people well. With this, we regain our light and salt, which gives us more power to accomplish great things!

Friend, we all have one of two choices in life: To be everything we can be, or to be less than we can be. You can become all that comes with your DNA and all your dreams. I want you to be everything God has called you to be. The difference is not the will to live, but the will to love. Your purpose for getting up today is to add salt and light to the lives of others!

Prayer

Father, show me how to be light and salt to those around me.
