Today, let’s reflect on what it truly means to ask for the right things. Despite the many challenges Solomon faced, God appeared to him and asked, “I’ll give you anything—what do you want?” Most people remember Solomon’s famous request for wisdom, but it’s easy to miss that he also asked for knowledge. Solomon’s prayer was for both wisdom and knowledge. God’s response is profound: “Since this is your heart’s desire”—that is, your deepest longing, the thing you want when no one is watching, the desire that lives in your very bones. God sees the heart, knows our truest intentions, and cannot be deceived.

God sees Solomon’s heart and says, “Since this is your heart’s desire, and you have not asked for wealth, possessions, or honor.” Think about it—Solomon needed honor, wealth, possessions, and even an army to run a kingdom. He was surrounded by enemies, but he did not ask for their destruction. Many wanted Solomon dead, yet he did not ask for a long life. Instead, his request focused on what mattered most: serving his people well.

My friend, to Solomon’s credit, he asked for wisdom and knowledge, not for selfish gain, but to govern God’s people well. God honored this selfless request: “Wisdom and knowledge will be given you.” But God didn’t stop there—He added a bonus: “I will also give you wealth, possessions, and honor, such as no king before or after you will ever have.” When you pursue wisdom and knowledge with the right motives, God can bless you beyond what you ask for. His wisdom and knowledge open the door to every other blessing.
