“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
In the heart of every human being, there is this belief that there is something going on behind the scenes. You see it come through in fiction all the time, in stories and movies, this idea that there is something about our lives that feels a bit dreamy, that feels as though behind it all, there is something richer, deeper.
Plato talked about it; he called it the “world of forms,” that there is something behind everything we’re doing that is eternal. That somehow we are on a stage and that, when this drama is over, we will go behind the curtain and begin to live our real lives.
All of us have that feeling inside of us because it’s the truth. And Jesus revealed to us that, not only was that true, but how to go through that curtain, and how to access the world outside of the stage, how to go deeper, how to go beyond just the regular, fleshy, normal world that we live out. And he taught us that, if we live in him, if we really do, we will live; that sting of death is taken out. Although we hate to experience death, that death has lost its sting because in the end we’re given eternal life in Jesus.
Prayer: Dear Lord, with you in my life I shall not fear death, for life continues from here through eternity. Amen.
Reflection: What is your greatest hope for what you will experience in heaven?
