You Have Many Callings

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.”

– John 15:16

Did you know that you have many callings? A lot of us go through life with the idea that there’s just one major thing we’re supposed to accomplish, but this is not correct. Most of us have many calls and each one prepares us for the next. For example, we looked at the story of Joseph, and for the last couple of days, at the life and trials of Jesus. I really don’t believe that Joseph would have been able to lead the nation of Egypt without his experience at Potiphar’s house, nor do I believe that Jesus could have so completely redeemed our suffering without choosing to first suffer with us. You see, by God’s design, everyone’s journey is meant to unfold gradually, with one thing leading to another; each piece is put in place to perfectly complement the one before.

Have you ever seen the back of a tapestry? If you didn’t know what it was, you would probably behold it as a knotted mess. However, all of the stitches and threads, though they look like a hodgepodge, create something beautiful on the other side — it’s a matter of big-picture perspective! I once desperately tried to hire a gentleman who was 72 years old. Unfortunately, he refused my offer because of his age, but before he did, he asked why I would want to work with him. I told him that it was because he was the wisest man I knew, having lived more years than me and having had so many different experiences. I recognized that the tapestry of His life was broad and valuable, and I wanted to learn from him.

Friend, the older you get, the more you have to offer; age has nothing to do with productivity or dreams! Abraham was in his 70’s when he got his promise from God and he was in his 90’s when it was fulfilled. The Lord can do what He wants to, and if you’re alive, it’s for a reason. Trust the journey He has ordained and know that everything He calls you to has a perfect purpose. The building blocks of your life are cast by His design and only He understands how precisely they fit together. Walk by faith and know that where you are in this season is exactly where you are supposed to be — He is constructing your destiny and molding you with each and every calling!
