Your Heavenly Bank Account

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

– Matthew 6:19-21

Do you understand what it means to store up treasures in Heaven? In the Greek, the word translated heaven is actually plural and it reflects the cosmology of the time in which it was written. During the life of Jesus, the common view of the cosmos was that there were three dimensions. The third heaven is the place we traditionally think of going when we die. The second heaven is the stars, sky, dome, and firmament over the earth; in other words, the universe, and the first heaven is the air around us.

When we follow this philosophy, the place we go when we die is similar to what we experience all around us. Consequently, when Jesus speaks of storing up treasures in the heavens, He is not saying to be really good so that you get lots of rewards after you die. He is instead saying there is a kind of treasure you can access today that comes directly from Heaven.

Friend, just like a direct deposit in your bank account, heavenly treasures are available to you even when they are not physically visible. In the same manner you would access money using your debit card, there is a bank full of spiritual gifts just waiting to be withdrawn from a never-ending depository. When you received Jesus Christ as Lord, He filled your ledger with eternal treasure that can’t be destroyed, and it is available to you right now!

I am grateful, Jesus, that I can store up good things from your Hand in this life, not just the life to come.

What are some of the spiritual treasures you have access to today?
