“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

– 1 John 3:1

Did you know that the names God gives you matter? Throughout Scripture, the Lord identifies His children using different kinds of names, and contrary to our world today, in Biblical times, they were not chosen randomly or according to preference. Instead, they were intended to reveal the essence of a person’s heart and soul. In fact, in Hebrew culture, monikers were often prophetic and offered a glimpse into someone’s future. While modern society no longer gives such clout to what we’re called, the customs of the ancient world should inspire us to take the identity our Savior gives to us seriously. Since He designated us as His favorite and called us chosen and beloved, we can live in confident assurance that His posture towards us is one of care, kindness, and mercy. Unfortunately, if we fail to internalize this truth, we can wrongly grant our culture, or even other people, permission to label us incorrectly; and if we’re not careful, these characterizations can become the basis of our identity. When this happens, immoral and self-destructive behaviors can set it in and lead us further away from God’s abundant life. This is why it’s imperative to know what the Lord says about us, and to build the foundation of our existence upon His truth, not upon our feelings or the words of others.

My friend, because of the great love your Savior so liberally lavished on you, you can live confidently as His beloved! No matter what names the devil has tempted you to internalize, His Word is the ultimate source of your identity, and His truth triumphs over every word spoken by man. Regardless of how many times you’ve been labeled, slandered, or misunderstood, you were chosen to be His child, and His affection for you is unwavering. You are redeemed, righteous, set free, blameless before God, and an heir to all of His good and perfect gifts! Isn’t that wonderful news?

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for your great love towards me. As you remind me of who I am, give me the courage and strength to confidently live it out.
